국문 초록

본 논문은 조나단 에드워즈(Jonathan Edwards, 1703-1758)의 부흥신학을 그의 신학적 미학(神學的 美學, theological aesthetics) 관점에서 재해석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 에드워즈는 삼위일체 하나님의 내적 조화와 사랑을 만물의 참된 아름다움의 근원으로 이해하였으며, 인간은 하나님의 형상을 따라 창조되어 하나님의 도덕적, 영적 아름다움을 반영하는 독특한 존재로 보았다. 그러나 인간의 타락으로 인해 이 신적 아름다움은 손상되었고, 인간 존재는 참된 탁월성과 거룩함을 상실하게 되었다. 에드워즈는 이러한 인간의 비참한 상태를 전제하면서도, 복음의 계시와 구속 사역을 통해 하나님의 영광과 아름다움이 다시 인류에게 전달되고 확장된다고 보았다. 에드워즈의 부흥신학은 단순히 도덕적 갱신이나 감정적 열광에 그치지 않는다. 그는 참된 부흥을 성령에 의해 일어나는 인간 영혼의 심층적 변형, 즉 하나님의 아름다움에 대한 직관적 인식과 존재의 전환으로 보았다. 회심은 인간이 성령의 조명 아래 하나님의 거룩과 사랑의 탁월함을 미적으로 인식하는 사건이며, 이는 단순한 개념적 이해를 넘어 '마음의 감각'(sense of the heart)으로 경험되는 것이다. 이때 신자는 하나님을 가장 사랑스러운 분으로 인식하고 자발적으로 순종과 거룩을 향해 나아가게 된다. 에드워즈에게 있어 참된 부흥은 이러한 회심의 체험이 공동체적으로 확산되어 하나님의 아름다움과 영광이 교회와 사회 전반에 넘쳐흐르는 사건이다. 본 논문은 에드워즈의 인간론, 회심론, 부흥론을 통합적으로 분석하며, 그의 부흥신학이 하나님의 아름다움에 대한 신학적 인식과 긴밀히 연결되어 있음을 밝힌다. 또한 에드워즈의 부흥신학이 감정주의나 합리주의를 초월하여, 성령에 의해 성취되는 존재론적 미학적 변형이라는 점을 강조한다. 이 연구를 통해 우리는 에드워즈가 부흥을 단지 종교적 열정의 분출로 보지 않고, 하나님의 미적 속성—거룩, 사랑, 조화—이 신자들 가운데 현현하는 신적 드라마로 이해하였음을 알 수 있다. 나아가 이러한 미학적 부흥신학은 현대 신학과 교회 실천에도 깊은 통찰을 제공할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study reinterprets Jonathan Edwards’s (1703-1758) theology of revival from the perspective of his theological aesthetics. Edwards understood the perfect harmony and love within the Trinity as the fountain of all true beauty and regarded humanity as a unique reflection of God’s moral and spiritual beauty, created in His image. Yet, through the Fall, humanity lost this divine beauty, descending into corruption and misery. Still, Edwards affirmed that through the revelation of the gospel and the work of redemption, the glory and beauty of God are again communicated to fallen humanity. His theology of revival transcends mere moral renewal or emotional enthusiasm. Edwards viewed true revival as a profound transformation of the human soul, initiated by the Spirit—an ontological change wherein the soul, under the Spirit’s illumination, perceives the divine excellency of God’s holiness and love in an aesthetic, intuitive manner. Conversion, therefore, is not simply rational assent to doctrine but an existential awakening through the “sense of the heart.” By this new sense the believer perceives God’s beauty as supremely delightful and is drawn to Him with spontaneous love and obedience. For Edwards, genuine revival is the collective manifestation of such conversions, whereby God’s beauty and glory overflow into the life of the church and society. This paper examines Edwards’s anthropology, doctrine of conversion, and theology of revival in an integrated manner, showing how his vision of revival is inseparably tied to the aesthetic perception of divine beauty. Furthermore, it emphasizes that Edwards’s theology of revival surpasses both emotionalism and rationalism, presenting revival as an ontological and aesthetic transformation wrought by the Spirit. Thus, revival is not merely a surge of religious fervor but a dramatic manifestation of God’s holy and loving beauty among His people, a vision offering rich insights for contemporary theology and church practice.
