국문 초록

본 논문은 니콜라이 볼레프 감독의 불가리아 영화 《마르가리트와 마르가리타》(1989)를 체제 전환기 불가리아 사회의 정신적 위기와 청년 세대의 투쟁을 그린 대표작으로 규정하고, 영화 전체의 서사 구조, 영화미학적 전략, 그리고 문화사적 의미를 종합적으로 분석한다. 이러한 분석을 위해 당시 사회주의 불가리아의 권력 체제의 특성과 미하일 바흐친의 카니발 이론을 분석 틀로 활용하였다. 1989년 불가리아 사회주의 체제 붕괴 직전에 제작된 영화 《마르가리트와 마르가리타》는 두 청춘 남녀의 저항과 연대, 그리고 궁극적 파멸을 통해 개인과 시스템 간의 근본적 대립을 탐구하며, 억압적 현실에서 저항적 연대의 형성, 카니발적 봉기, 시스템의 반격과 포획, 희생의 변증법을 거쳐 완전한 소멸에 이르는 과정을 보여준다. 영화사적 맥락에서 이 작품은 불가리아 뉴웨이브의 비판 정신을 계승하면서도 글라스노스트 시대의 직설적 고발을 넘어선 절대적 비관주의를 표방하고 있다. 또한 이 작품은 체코 뉴웨이브의 희극적 저항과 폴란드 학파의 낭만적 비극을 모두 포함하고 있으며, 나아가 그것들이 유지했던 최소한의 희망마저 거부함으로써 동유럽 영화사에서 독특한 위치를 차지하게 되었다. 세계 영화사적으로는 고다르의 정치적 실험, 파스빈더의 권력 비판, 파졸리니의 사디즘 탐구를 종합하면서, 다른 한편으로는 시스템의 변모와 영속성이라는 특성을 보여준다. 본 연구는 이 영화가 도스토옙스키 문학의 상호텍스트적 전통 위에서 ‘후견인 시스템’이라는 새로운 형태의 권력과 그것이 가져올 ‘완전한 소멸’의 메커니즘을 예언적으로 통찰한 성취이기도 하다는 점을 논증한다. 특히 “죽은 밍크” 모피 코트로 상징되는 타락한 자본주의의 본질을 간파한 정치적 통찰은 체제 전환 이후 동유럽 현실을 15년 앞서 예견한 것으로 평가된다.

영문 초록

This paper defines Nikolai Volev’s Bulgarian film Margarit and Margarita (1989) as a representative work depicting the spiritual crisis of Bulgarian society during the transitional period and the struggles of the youth generation, and comprehensively analyzes the film’s overall narrative structure, cinematic aesthetic strategies, and cultural-historical significance. To this end, the analysis employs the characteristics of the power system in socialist Bulgaria at the time and Mikhail Bakhtin’s carnival theory as analytical frameworks. Produced just before the collapse of the Bulgarian socialist regime in 1989, the film Margarit and Margarita explores the fundamental antagonism between the individual and the system through the resistance, solidarity, and ultimate downfall of two young lovers, depicting a process that progresses from the formation of resistant solidarity in an oppressive reality, through carnivalesque uprising, the system’s counterattack and capture, and the dialectics of sacrifice, to complete annihilation. In the context of Bulgarian film history, this work inherits the critical spirit of the Bulgarian New Wave while transcending the direct accusations of the Glasnost era to espouse an absolute pessimism. Furthermore, it encompasses both the comedic resistance of the Czech New Wave and the romantic tragedy of the Polish School, and by rejecting even the minimal hope they maintained, it occupies a unique position in Eastern European film history. In the broader context of world cinema, it synthesizes Godard’s political experimentation, Fassbinder’s critique of power, and Pasolini’s exploration of sadism, while also demonstrating the transformation and persistence of the system. This study argues that the film represents a prophetic insight into the new form of power known as the “patronage system” and the mechanism of “complete annihilation” it brings, creatively inheriting and surpassing the intertextual tradition of Dostoevsky’s literature on the foundation of 19th-century Russian literary heritage. In particular, its political insight into the essence of corrupt capitalism, symbolized by the “dead mink” fur coat, is evaluated as a foresight of the Eastern European reality post-regime change by 15 years.
