초등 도덕과 ‘자연과의 관계’ 영역에 대한 불교 생태윤리 적용 가능성 검토

국문 초록

본 연구는 2022 개정 도덕과 교육과정에서 독립된 영역으로 변경된 ‘자연과의 관계’의 내용 요소를 불교의 생태윤리에 적용하여 분석하고자 하였다. 불교에서는 연기에 기반하여 인간과 자연의 관계를 동등하게 바라보고 그에 따른 자비행의 실천을 통해 현재의 생태 위기 문제를 해결하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 관점을 바탕으로 자연과의 관계 영역에 제시된 네 가지 내용 요소에 대해 살펴보고 불교 생태윤리에 기반한 실제적인 교육방안에 대해 제시하였다. 먼저 생명 존중에 관해서는 종류와 관계없이 모든 생명은 소중하다는 점을 강조하였고, 인간과 자연의 공생에서는 모든 생명체를 함께 연결하여 생각하는 호모 인드라네티우스와 같은 인간상의 필요성을 주장하였다. 이어서 환경위기 극복 방안 실천에서는 환경을 지키기 위한 개인적 노력의 지속적인 실천을 당부하였고, 마지막으로 지속가능한 삶을 추구하기 위해서는 미래세대에 책임 의식을 갖고 환경 회복을 위해 노력해야 한다고 역설하였다. 하지만 불교의 생태윤리 또한 현대 과학기술과의 긴장, 자연에 대한 지나친 이상화 경향 등이 문제점으로 지적될 수 있으므로 현대사회의 특성에 맞게 정교한 재구성 과정이 필요함을 주장하였다.

영문 초록

This study examines the content elements of the “Relationship with Nature” domain, newly established as an independent area in the 2022 revised Korean moral education curriculum, through the lens of Buddhist ecological ethics. Buddhism, regards the relationship between humans and nature as fundamentally equal, grounded in the principle of Pratityasamutpada (緣起), and proposes Benevolent Practices (慈悲行) as a way to address the current ecological crisis. Building on this perspective, the study analyzes the four content elements presented in the “Relationship with Nature” domain and proposes practical educational approaches grounded in Buddhist ecological ethics. First, in relation to respect for life, it emphasizes the intrinsic value of all living beings regardless of species. Second, concerning the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature, it argues for a human ideal such as Homo Indranetius, one who recognizes all life as interconnected. Third, in relation to overcoming environmental crises, it emphasizes the importance of individuals’ consistent efforts to protect the environment. Finally, in the pursuit of a sustainable life, it stresses responsibility toward future generations and engaging in efforts to restore the environment. At the same time, the study notes challenges facing Buddhist ecological ethics, including possible tensions with scientific perspectives and the tendency to idealize nature. Thus, it calls for a refined reinterpretation suited to contemporary society.
