빌뇌브 감독의 영화 <컨택트>(Arrival)는 외계 언어 습득이 초래하는 시간 인식의근본적인 변화와 이로 인해 제기되는 자유의지의 문제를 탐구하는 철학적 서사를 담고 있다. 헵타포드 언어의 습득 과정, 무시제적 시간 경험, 그리고 언어와 사고와의관계에 관한 사피어-워프 가설을 반영하는 설정이 그 핵심을 이룬다. 이러한 요소들은궁극적으로 결정론적 세계에서 자유의지가 발견될 수 있는지의 문제로 수렴된다. 언어학자 루이즈는 인간과 완전히 다른 개념틀을 지닌 헵타포드의 언어를 배우면서 그들의 비선형적 시간관을 익히고 결국 미래를 보게 된다. 미래에는 딸과 함께하는 행복한 순간들과 딸의 죽음이라는 고통이 있었다. 이 비극을 알면서도 루이즈는 끝내자신이 본 대로의 미래를 택한다. 이는 상반된 두 가지 해석으로 이어진다. 하나는 루이즈의 선택이 자신이 본 미래에 대한 수동적인 순응일 뿐이라는 견해이고, 다른 하나는 죽음이라는 결과는 같아도 이에 이르는 과정의 의미를 강조하며 자유의지의 여지를 찾는 해석이다. 본 연구는 우선 <컨택트>에서 루이즈가 개념틀의 차이를 극복하고 존재론적 만남에 도달하는 과정을 데이비슨의 자비의 원리를 통해 설명한다. 이어, 언어 습득에 따라 미래와 현재를 함께 인식하는 과정을 맥타가트의 시간 이론을 적용해 분석한다. 그리고 모든 사건이 인과적으로 결정된다고 보는 결정론과 인간의 자유의지를 동시에 긍정하는 데넷의 양립가능론을 적용하여 루이즈의 선택이 지니는 철학적 함의를 고찰한다. 루이즈는 합리적 행위자로서 미리 본 미래를 숙고했으며 다른선택을 내릴 수 있었음에도 바로 그 경로를 선택했다. 여기서 ‘원할 가치가 있는 자유의지’를 위한 ‘엘보우 룸’이 발견된다

영문 초록

Denis Villeneuve’s film Arrival interweaves a philosophical narrative. It thoroughly explores how learning an alien language brings about a fundamental transformation in the perception of time, which leads to the problem of free will. The learning process of the Heptapod language results in atemporal conscious experience. The film’s setting regarding the relationship between language and thought also echoes the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. These theoretical elements all converge on the central question of whether free will can be found in a deterministic world. While learning the Heptapod language, which has a conceptual scheme radically different from that of humans, Louise, a linguist, internalizes their non-linear conception of time and eventually sees the future. This future includes happy moments with a daughter and the agony of her premature death. Despite knowing the tragedy, Louise embraces the future as it is. Her decision has given rise to competing interpretations. One sees her decision as a passive conformity to the future she has already seen. The other finds some room for free will, emphasizing the meaning of the life journey, even if the outcome remains the same. This study first argues that Louise overcame radical differences in conceptual schemes and reached an ontological encounter through Davidson’s principle of charity. Next, I analyze the simultaneous experience of the present and future, made possible by learning an alien language, using McTaggart’s classification of time theories. I further examine the philosophical significance of Louise’s decision by applying Dennett’s compatibilism, which acknowledges both free will and determinism, where the future is causally determined by the laws of nature. Louise, as a rational agent, deliberated on her foreseen future and chose that very path even though she could have made other choices. Here, we can find “elbow room” for “the varieties of free will worth wanting.”
