국문 초록

영화 <서브스턴스(The Substance)>는 인간의 욕망과 신체, 그리고 이를 둘러싼 사회적 강박과 자본주의적 구조를 탐구하는 작품이다. 본 연구는 자크 라캉의 정신분석학, 언캐니·고어·그로테스크 미학을 중심으로 영화가 함의한 메시지를 분석한다. 특히 <서브스턴스>에 나타난 ‘노화를 거스르고자 하는 신체적 욕망’이 자본주의 사회에서 어떻게 상품화되고 강박적으로 반복되는지를 주목한다. 영화는 인물의 신체가변화하고 신체를 변형시키는 과정을 통해 욕망의 내면에 자리한 불안과 결핍이 어떻게 증폭되는지와, 그로 인해 파생되는 정체성의 분열을 상징적으로 시각화하였다. 라캉의 정신분석학에 따르면, 욕망은 결코 충족될 수 없으며 인간은 끊임없이 결핍을 채우려 하지만 그 과정에서 더 큰 불안을 겪게 된다. 이러한 이론을 바탕으로, 본연구는 영화 속 그로테스크 이미지들이 신체적 공포와 정신적 불안, 노화에 대한 사회적 혐오를 어떻게 드러내고 있는지 고찰한다. 나아가, 영화는 외모 지상주의와 소비문화, 현대 자본주의 사회가 부과하는 ‘완벽한 젊음’의 기준에 의해 구성되는 신체에대한 강박을 비판적으로 조명한다. 연구를 통해 영화가 인간의 신체를 하나의 소비대상으로 전락시키는 과정을 심리적ㆍ미학적으로 형상화하고 있음을 목격하였다. 본 연구는 정신분석과 영상 미학의 결합을 통해 영화 <서브스턴스>를 다각도ㆍ다층적으로 해석함으로써, 영화연구뿐 아니라 정신분석학, 사회학, 문화 예술학 등 학제간 논의의 지평을 확장하는 데 기여할 수 있어 유의미하다

영문 초록

The film explores human desire and the body, along with the surrounding social compulsions and capitalist structures. This study analyzes the film’s underlying messages through the lens of Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory and the aesthetics of the uncanny, gore, and grotesque. It particularly focuses on how the ‘bodily desire to resist aging’ is commodified and compulsively repeated within capitalist society, and how the transformation of the protagonist’s body amplifies anxiety and inner lack, ultimately leading to a fragmentation of identity. According to Lacanian psychoanalysis, desire is never fully satisfied, and humans continuously seek to fill this lack, only to experience even greater anxiety. Based on this framework, this study examines how grotesque imagery in the film reveals physical fear, psychological unease, and social aversion to aging while critically illuminating the obsession with the body shaped by lookism, consumer culture, and the capitalist ideal of ‘perfect youth’. Through this analysis, it observes how the film psychologically and aesthetically represents the process in which the human body is reduced to an object of consumption. By combining psychoanalysis with visual aesthetics, this study offers a multifaceted and multilayered interpretation of and contributes meaningfully not only to film studies but also to interdisciplinary discussions in psychoanalysis, sociology, and cultural and artistic studies.
