융의 개성화과정의 관점에서 살펴본 『대승기신론』

국문 초록

본 연구는 『대승기신론』에 나타나는 중요한 개념들을 융의 개성화과정(Individuation)의 견지에서 살펴본다. 먼저 『대승기신론』의 사유의 틀이라고 할 수 있는 일심(一心)의 두 측면, 진여문과 생멸문을 검토하고 마음의 두 가지 측면이 개성화과정에서의 자기와 자아의 관계로 볼 수 있음을 살펴본다. 다음으로 중생심안에는 여래장이라고 하는 깨끗한 마음이 있어서 깨달음을 가능하게 하는데 『대승기신론』에서 말하는 깨달음은 중생심 속에 잠재된 여래장을 완전히 자각하는 것이며 이것은 융의 입장에서 보면 원래부터 충만했던 자기 본연의 모습을 실현하는 일이라는 것을 밝힌다. 『대승기신론』에서 각(覺)은 크게 시각과 본각으로 나뉜다. 시각은 깨달음을 얻고자 비로소 시작하는 단계의 각이고 본각은 본래 갖추어진 깨달음이다. 시각에서 본각으로의 깨달음의 과정은 융의 자아에서 자기로의 변화를 말하는 것이며 개성화과정에 해당한다고 보았다. 다음으로 훈습(熏習)의 개념을 통해 개성화를 검토한다. 훈습은 영향을 미친다는 개념으로 정법훈습과 염법훈습이 있고 각각 진여가 무명에, 무명이 진여에 영향을 주는 것을 말한다. 훈습의 근거는 진여(眞如)이고 이것은 융에게 자기(Selbst)이며 융의 사상속에는 각각 정법훈습과 염법훈습의 과정이 나타난다. 염법훈습을 통해 그림자를 동화하고 나서 자기를 중심으로 의식을 확장하면 이것이 곧 개성화이고 정법훈습이 됨을 밝힌다. 융의 개성화와 『대승기신론』의 깨달음 모두 자아의 제한된 동일시를 넘어선다는 공통점을 지닌다. 이것이 융에게서는 큰 전체와의 합일로 나타난다면 『대승기신론』에서는 무아를 깨닫는 것으로 나타난다. 논문의 결론 부분에서 『대승기신론』에 융의 개성화과정이 나타나고 있음을 말한 후에 양자의 차이점과 한계에 대해서 논하였다.

영문 초록

This study explores key concepts in The Awakening of Faith in the Mahāyāna(大乘起信論) through the lens of Carl Jung’s theory of individuation. It begins by examining the dual nature of the One Mind (一心): the Gate of Suchness(眞如門) and the Gate of Phenomenal Arising(生滅門), which together form the core framework of the text. These two aspects of mind are interpreted as corresponding to the relationship between the Selbst(自己) and the ego(自我) within the individuation process. The study then analyzes the Mind of Sentient Beings(衆生心), which contains the pure essence of mind known as the Tathāgatagarbha(如來藏). In The Awakening of Faith, enlightenment is understood as the full realization of the Tathāgatagarbha latent within the sentient mind. This notion parallels Jung’s conception of individuation as the realization of one’s original wholeness. The paper further examines the distinction between Initial Enlightenment(始覺) and Original Enlightenment(本覺). Initial Enlightenment marks the beginning of the aspiration toward awakening, whereas Original Enlightenment refers to the inherent, ever-present state of enlightenment. The transition from Initial Enlightenment to Original Enlightenment reflects the transformation of the ego into the Selbst, mirroring the process of Jungian individuation. A key focus of this study is the concept of Perfuming(熏習), which refers to the mutual influence between Suchness(眞如) and Ignorance(無明). This process is expressed in two forms: Perfuming by the True Dharma(淨法熏習) and Perfuming by the Defiled Dharma(染法熏習). This dynamic is interpreted as analogous to Jung’s notion of psychological influence, in which the unconscious(Selbst) transforms the ego through both shadow integration and conscious development. Perfuming by the Defiled Dharma symbolizes the confrontation with the shadow and the expansion of the ego, eventually giving way to Perfuming by the True Dharma, which signifies conscious alignment with the Selbst. Ultimately, both Jung’s individuation process and the path to enlightenment in The Awakening of Faith aim to transcend the limitations of the ego-self. Whereas Jung emphasizes integration with a greater totality, The Awakening of Faith in the Mahāyāna emphasizes the realization of no-self(無我). In conclusion, this paper argues that The Awakening of Faith in the Mahāyāna presents a structure that closely parallels Jung’s individuation process, while also acknowledging the distinct differences and limitations of each approach to psychological and spiritual transformation.
