국문 초록

이 글은 1980-90년대에 걸친 한국 무협 소설의 전환을 살피는 글이다. 특히 주인공을 중심으로 캐릭터의 유형 변화를 통해 이 부분을 논의한다. 지난 60여 년간 한국 장르 문학에서 유력한 위치를 차지했고, 현재까지도 그 영향력이 유효한 무협 장르를 다루는 연구는 현재 심상의 한 단면을 이해할 수 있는 단초가 될 수 있다. 이를 위해 이 글에서는 1980년대~90년대 무협의 장르적 위치를 되짚고, 어떠한 변화가 일어났는지를 분석했다. 1980년대 무협 장르가 필화사건 등으로 인하여 일정 부분 제약이 가해진 채 선악의 명징한 구도 속에서 캐릭터를 구성했다. 그리고 신화적 개인의 서사에 과장이 더해지며 80년대 무협 특유의 서사가 구축되었다. 1990년대 들어서는 취향의 문제가 두드러지면서 한국의 무협은 ‘신무협’이라는 변화를 맞이하게 된다. 개성이 강한 주인공이 비교적 현실적인 감각을 갖추고, 무림의 세계는 선악의 구조도 모호해지는 현상을 보인다. 이러한 변화 속에서 한국의 무협은 더 다채로운 형상을 갖추며 현실과 호흡할 수 있었다. 문학성이 높다고 할 수는 없는 무협 장르이지만, 무협은 장르적으로 최소한의 시의성과 재미의 문제 속에서 변화를 모색해 왔고, 그것을 원동력으로 현재까지 한국의 유력한 장르로 자리할 수 있었다. 이를 통하여 우리는 시대의 심상과 대중문화의 한 단면을 알 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This article considers the evolution of mu-hyeop(martial arts) novels in the 1980s and 1990s, focusing particularly on the different types of characters, especially protagonists. Mu-hyeop novels have maintained a dominant position in Korean popular literature over the past 60 years, and the analysis of the characteristics of mu-hyeop novels can provide a window into the state of mind for particular periods. This article describes genre position of mu-hyeop novels in the 1980s and 1990s and then analyzes the changes that occurred within them. In the 1980s, mu-hyeop novels, constrained to a certain extent by the government censorship, contained characters that were associated with a clear depiction of good vs. evil, with exaggerated narratives related to mythical individuals. In the 1990s, as personal preferences became more prominent, mu-hyeop novels underwent a transformation referred to as “Shinmuhyeop”(new martial arts). In this new form, the protagonist, who has complex personality, is relatively grounded in reality, while the world around him or her blurs the division between good and evil. In conjunction with these changes, Korean popular fiction as a whole became more colorful and in touch with reality. Although they are not considered high literature, mu-hyeop novels have sought to change with the times and provide relevant entertainment and have been able to establish themselves as a powerful genre within Korea. Through them, we can understand the cultural concerns of specific eras and the evolution of popular culture.
