신라 마립간기 경주지역 주변지구 군집묘의 ‘혈연’과 ‘위계’ 관계 재검토

국문 초록

신라 마립간기 경주지역 중심지구와 함께 신라 6부 및 왕도를 구성하였던 경주지역 주변지구 고분군에 대한 연구는 최근까지 미진하였다. 이러한 가운데 경주지역 중심지구와 주변지구 무덤을 아우른 최병현(2021)의 편년과 위계 구분안은 신라고고학에서 중요한 연구성과라 할 수 있다. 그러나 위 최병현의 연구를 포함하여 기존 연구에서는 ‘위계’ 관계와 ‘혈연’ 관계에 대한 선험적, 이 분법적, 대립적 시각으로 인해 고대사회에서 혈연이 지녔던 정치적 함의를 충분히 고려하지 못하고 있다. 또 최병현이 월성북고분군 적석목곽묘를 중심으로 경주지역 중심지구와 주변지구 무덤의 위계 구분 기준으로 삼은 (1) 출토품 랭크, (2) 묘곽면적, (3) 묘제, (4) 묘곽형식, (5) 호석·주구시설이 경주지역 주변지구 무덤에도 실제로 적용 가능한 것인지는 구체적으로 검토되지 않았다. 본고에서는 신라 마립간기 경주지역 중심지구 무덤에서처럼 뚜렷한 위계 차이가 보이지 않는다는 이유로 ‘가족묘’나 혈연적 관계에 있는 이들의 무덤군으로 치부되고 마는 경주지역 주변지구 군집묘 내 무덤 및 서로 다른 군집묘 사이의 미묘한 차이를 밝히고, 이를 당시 경주지역 중앙세력과 주변세력의 사회적 전략이라는 측면에서 보다 구체적으로 이해해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 경주 지역 주변지구 고분군 중 30기 이상의 무덤이 조사된 8개소 유적을 대상으로 위 (1)~(5) 무덤 속 성의 위계적 상관관계 및 시공간적 분포양상을 유적 간, 유적 내 비교한다. 이를 통해 경주지역 주변지구 고분군에서는 위 (1)~(5) 속성 사이의 보편적인 위계관계 대신 유적에 따라 가변적인 부분적 위계관계가 있음을 밝힌다. 또 유적 내에서는 최병현(2021)이 높은 위계로 상정한 속성이 특정 무덤군에 따로 모여 있거나 서로 다른 무덤군에 불규칙하게 출현하는 대신 서로 다른 무덤군에 비슷한 비율로 분산 분포함을 보인다. 이러한 양상은 주변지구 군집묘가 혈연관계에 있는 이들의 사망에 따라 임의적으로 만들어진 것이 아니라, 무덤 속성 결정에 있어 유적 내 서로 다른 무덤군 조영 집단간 주의 깊은 상호 참조와 규제 관행 및 균형 관계 유지 노력을 통해 형성된 것임을 시사한다. 이와 같은 의도적 관행에 대해 마립간기 신라 중앙세력의 확산 및 읍락사회 재편에 대한 기존 연구를 참조하여 신라 중앙세력의 ‘간접지배’ 및 ‘이이제이’ 전략과 관련되었을 가능성을 제시한다.

영문 초록

Until recently, 4-6C Silla burials in the peripheral areas of Gyeongju have been underresearched, despite the fact that those areas constituted the capital city of Silla, together with the central area of Gyeongju. Under these circumstances, Choi (2021)’s comprehensive analysis of chronological and hierarchical relations of those burials from the peripheral areas as well as the central areas of Gyeongju are worthy of note. Nevertheless, in previous studies, including but not limited to Choi (ibid.)’s, a priori dichotomic and oppositional views of blood ties and hierarchies in ancient societies blocked political implications of blood ties in ancient societies from being properly discussed. In addition, Choi (ibid.) assumed, instead of analysing and demonstrating, the positive correlation and hierarchical relations between (1) grave goods, (2) grave size, (3) burial type, (4) grave type, and (5) burial enclosures. This study aims to shed light on subtle differences between burials and burial groups in the peripheral areas of Gyeongju, and unravel their social implications. For this purpose, eight cemeteries in the peripheral areas, where detailed information of more than thirty burials is available, is analysed. The focus is placed on any existing correlation between (1)~(5) burial attributes and their patterning in time and space. It reveals partial and contingent hierarchies between those five attributes. Analysis also shows that high-ranking attributes listed by Choi (2021) are by and large evenly distributed between different burial clusters. This evenness is impossible without careful monitoring and cross-referencing between different burial clusters. The possibility is suggested that this intentional practice was related to social strategies of ‘indirect control’ and ‘playing off one group against another’ employed by the central power in Gyeongju.
