삼국시대 외래계 동경의 연대 간극과 그 요인

국문 초록

한반도 남부지역에서 출토된 삼국시대의 외래계 동경 중에는, 형태적 특징을 통해 유추할 수 있는 동경의 연대와 공반 유물을 통해 추정할 수 있는 동경의 폐기연대 사이에 간극을 가지는 사례가 확인된다. 이로 인해 동경의 성격을 비롯한 여러 문제들이 제기되어왔다. 이 글에서는 동경을 둘러싼 사회적·문화적 배경에 주목하여 동경의 연대 간극을 새로운 시각에서 재조명하고자 하였다. 먼저 삼국시대 한반도 남부지역과 한대 이후 중국 대륙을 대상으로 동경을 둘러싼 여러 사회적·문화적 배경을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 동경의 연대 간극과는 별개로 외래계 동경이 폐기연대 와 가까운 시점에 유입될 수 있었음을 지적하였다. 한편 중국과 일본의 사례를 통해 동경이 장기간 사용·간직될 수 있는 배경을 정리하였다. 이를 토대로 전세를 포함하여 외래계 동경의 연대 간극이 발생할 수 있는 여러 구체적인 요인을 제시하였다. 선대의 기물이 후대에 유통되고 부장되는 것을 일률적으로 전세로 설명할 수는 없다. 이 글에서는 동경에서 나타나는 연대 간극을 단순한 시차로 간주하는 대신 당시 동북아시아의 다양한 사회적·문화적 배경이 복합적으로 작용한 결과로 보았다. 이를 통해 삼국시대의 외래계 동경을 바라보는 새로운 시각을 제시할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

In the southern region of the Korean Peninsula during the Three Kingdoms period, foreign-origin bronze mirrors have a “Time of Peak”, which is inferred from their morphological characteristics, and the “Time of Disposal”, which is estimated through associated artifacts. The chronological gap between these two times has raised various issues, including the characteristics of the bronze mirrors. The purpose of this paper is to reconsider this chronological gap from a new perspective by focusing on the social and cultural background surrounding bronze mirrors. The distribution of foreign-origin bronze mirrors excavated in the southern region of the Korean Peninsula during the Three Kingdoms period directly reflects changes in external exchanges and international networks over time. Additionally, bronze mirrors similar to those found in the southern Korean Peninsula have intermittently been identified in China since the Eastern Jin period. This suggests that Bronze Mirrors could have been introduced at a time close to the “Time of Disposal”, regardless of the chronological gap. Meanwhile, the long-term retention and use of Bronze Mirrors in the Korean Peninsula can be examined with reference to cases from China and Japan. Based on this discussion, this paper identifies various factors, including the passing down of artifacts through generations, that may have contributed to the occurrence of the chronological gap in bronze mirrors. There are multiple factors behind the delayed disposal of artifacts from earlier periods, which cannot be explained by a single framework alone. The chronological gap observed in bronze mirrors is not merely a matter of time lag but rather a result of the complex interplay of diverse social and cultural contexts in Northeast Asia at the time.
