국문 초록

This study examines how Korean physicians in the late Joseon dynasty responded to measles outbreaks by focusing on Measles(痲疹篇), a specialized medical text attributed to the regional physician Yu I-tae (劉以泰, 1652-1715). From the late 17th to early 19th century, repeated measles epidemics caused significant social and medical disruption across Korea. In response, various therapeutic strategies emerged, often informed by Chinese medical knowledge. Measles is a clinical manual based on Chinese texts such as Zhanke Cuanyao (疹科纂要) and contains preventive measures, symptom-based treatments, prognostic indicators, and 93 therapeutic prescriptions. Yu I-tae interpreted measles as a febrile disease caused by internal “heat-toxins” accumulated in the heart, lungs, and six bowels. His approach emphasized the release of this heat through skin eruptions and promoted ‘Seungmagalgeun-tang’ (升麻葛根湯) as a primary treatment. The text categorizes the disease progression into three stages—fever onset, rash development, and resolution—each requiring distinct interventions. Although Measles presents measles primarily as a pediatric disease, this reflects both the influence of Chinese medical traditions and the public health conditions of 1930s Korea when the text was printed by physician Park Ju-heon. Despite ongoing debates over its authorship and date of composition, Measles remains a valuable source for understanding clinical practices and medical reasoning in premodern Korea. By analyzing this text, the study provides insight into the epistemological framework of East Asian medicine and the localized strategies developed to manage epidemic diseases such as measles.
