<엄씨효문청행록>의 군담 연구 - <명주보월빙>·<윤하정삼문취록>과의 비교를 중심으로

국문 초록

본고에서는 국문장편소설 <엄씨효문청행록>의 군담에 주목하였다. 그 존재양상과 특징을 전작･원작에 해당하는 <명주보월빙>･<윤하정삼문취록>과의 비교 하에서 고찰한 후, 문학사적 의미를 도출하고자 하였다. <엄씨효문청행록>의 군담은30권의 낙선재본 기준으로 2권에 달하는 상당한 분량을 차지하였으며, 타 작품들과구분할 만한 특이성을 보일 뿐만 아니라 전작과의 연속성을 짙게 드러내고 있었다. 아울러 작품의 창작 과정에서 독자가 세 작품을 연속하여 읽을 바를 고려한 정황도확인된 바, 군담 서술의 문제를 깊이 고찰할 필요가 있다고 보았다. 작품 간 군담의 비교 검토를 통해, <엄씨효문청행록>에서는 전작의 서사를 재서술하는 과정에서 군담에 해당하는 내용을 확장･변이시키면서 전작에서 미진했던 주요 갈등을 보완하는 점, 본작 4회에 전작까지 포함하면 도합 19회에 달하는 군담이적대자형 인물 형상과 대결 방식 등의 변주를 통해 상호간 차별화를 이룬 점, 엄문(嚴門) 직계에 해당하는 인물의 활약상은 축약하거나 생략하는 반면 인척관계에있는 인물들의 활약상은 구체화하면서 일문(一門) 중심의 서술이 약화된 점을 확인하였다. 이상의 지점들로 미루어 보아, <엄씨효문청행록>을 포함한 <명주보월빙> 이하세 작품의 군담은 세 작품에 대한 독자의 ‘이어읽기’와 군담 특유의 흥미 제고를주의 깊게 고려하면서 창작되었을 것으로 보았다. 또한 국문장편소설의 향유에서군담은 충분히 매력적인 이야기가 될 수 있었지만, 독자의 기호와 창작 방식에 따라호불호가 갈리거나 흥미를 반감시키는 요인이 되기도 하였음을 유추하였다. 마지막으로 작중 군담에서 세 작품 간의 상호관계성 및 독자의 ‘이어읽기’를 강화하는 방향성이 엿보이는 점과 일문 중심의 서술이 약화되는 점을 고려할 때, <엄씨효문청행록>은 <명주보월빙>･<윤하정삼문취록>을 잇는 삼부작 연작소설로 규정하는 것이 보다 타당함을 밝혔다.

영문 초록

In this paper, we focused on the “military tales”(軍談) in the Korean novel , and compared their existence and characteristics with the previous and original works, and , and then attempted to derive their literary historical significance. The military tales in took up a considerable amount of space, two volumes based on the 30-volume Naksunjae(樂善齋) version, and not only showed uniqueness that distinguished them from other works, but also strongly revealed continuity with the previous work. In addition, it was confirmed that the creative process of the work took into account the readers’ intention to read the three works consecutively, and therefore it was deemed necessary to deeply examine the issue of the description of the military tales. Through a comparative review of the military tales between the works, it can be confirmed that in the process of retelling the narrative of the previous work, expanded and mutated the content corresponding to the military tale, that the military tales, which total 19 times including the previous work, were differentiated from each other through variations in the form of antagonistic characters and the method of confrontation, and that while the activities of the characters corresponding to the direct line of the Um clan were abbreviated or omitted, the activities of the characters of the other clan (他門) who are relatives were specified, weakening the narrative centered on the single clan(一門). Based on the above points, it can be confirmed that the military tales of the three works including and were created with careful consideration for the readers’ ‘continued reading’ of the three works and the heightened interest unique to military tales. In addition, it was inferred that while military tales can be sufficiently attractive stories in the enjoyment of Korean long novels, they can also be factors that divide opinions or reduce interest depending on the reader’s taste and creative style. Finally, considering that the military tales in the work show the direction of strengthening the interrelationship and continuous reading among the three works and the weakening of the narrative centered on one sentence, it was revealed that it is more appropriate to define as a trilogy of novels that follows and .
