국문 초록

본 논문은 장애학의 관점에서 조세희의 『난장이가 쏘아올린 작은 공』을 재해석하려는 목적을 가진다. 이 작품은 ‘난장이’, ‘꼽추’, ‘앉은뱅이’이라는 ‘불구자’의 형상을 중심으로 하여 도시개발로 인해 취약한 위치에 놓인 존재를 형상화하고 있는데, 이 지점은 지금까지 축적된 선행연구에서 간과된 지점이다. 따라서 본 논문은 장애학의 논의를 활용하여 불구자 형상이 만들어낸 효과를 주목했다. 이는 단지 ‘난장이’라는 표상이 갖는 작품 내의 효과를 살펴보는 것을 넘어, 불구성에 대한 사유가 이 시대에 이 작품을 읽어내는 데 반드시 필요하다는 문제의식에 근거한다. ‘난장이’로서의 김불이는 산업화 시대 민중의 상징이었지만, 동시에 불구적 존재로서의 삶을 전개하는 데는 실패했다. 작품의 서사적 중심은 난장이인 김불이에게서 시작해 남은 자들의 노동운동의 동력을 그려내 것이었지만, 그 전망은 폐쇄적이고 절망적인 경향을 벗어나지 않는다. 그러나 ‘불구자’의 흔적들을 시야에 넣는다면, 꼽추와 앉은뱅이라는 존재는 1970년대의 시기 불구적 존재들이 어떻게 삶을 개척해왔고, 그 과정에서 정치적 가능성을 탐색해왔는지 살펴볼 수 있다. 그들이 생존을 지속하며 만들어낸 궤적은 이러한 절망 속에서 서로를 도우며 살아남는다는 것이 어떤 의미였는지 숙고하게 한다. 이를 통해 본 논문은 불구의 존재론을 살펴본다. 안정적인 거주 기반이 없고, 노동의 자리조차 발견하기 어려운 것처럼 보일때도 그들은 어떤 틈입의 순간을 발견한다. 그것은 ‘기생’이나 의존을 생존 방법으로 취하는 구조적 계급 문제를 깨닫지 못한 기준 미달의 행위가 아니라, 더 이상 삶의 가능성이 남아있지 않은 것처럼 보이는 상황에서도 서로를 배반하지 않으며 삶의 순간을 열어내는 의지에 가깝다. 불구적 존재들은 수행성의 정치, 접근성의 정치, 잔존하는 정치의 흔적을 발굴해냈던 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to reinterpret Cho Se-hee’s The Dwarf from the perspective of disability studies. This work centers around the figure of the ‘dwarf,’ ‘hunchback,’ and ‘cripple,’ portraying those placed in vulnerable positions due to urban development, a point that has been overlooked in previous research accumulated thus far. Therefore, this paper focuses on the effects created by the image of the disabled by utilizing the discourse of disability studies. This is based on the awareness that contemplating disability is essential to interpreting this work in this era, beyond simply examining the effects of the representation of the ‘dwarf’ within the work. Kim Bul-i, as the ‘dwarf,’ symbolized the people of the industrialization era but failed to carry out life as a disabled person. The narrative focus of the work begins with the dwarf Kim Bul-i and portrays the labor movement’s momentum among the remaining people, but this outlook remains closed and hopeless. However, if we bring the traces of the ‘disabled’ into view, we can explore how the crippled beings of the 1970s forged their lives and explored political possibilities in the process. The trajectory they created while continuing to survive prompts reflection on what it meant to live by helping one another in such despair. Through this, this paper examines the ontology of disability. Even when there seems to be no stable living foundation and it is difficult to find a place for labor, they discover moments of intrusion. It is not an act of failing to realize the structural class issues where ‘parasitism’ or dependence is taken as a survival method, but rather, even when there appears to be no possibility left for life, they do not betray each other and persist in opening moments of life. The disabled beings excavated the politics of performance, the politics of accessibility, and traces of remaining politics.
