국문 초록

이 연구는 웹툰 <나의 어린고양이와 늙은개>를 중심으로 동시대 다종 가족(multi-species family) 및 그와 관련된 ‘좋은 삶’의 양상을 비판적으로 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 대한민국은 현재 ‘반려동물 천만시대’에 접어들어, 전체 가구의 약 29.7%가 반려동물과 함께 생활하고 있다. 이러한 맥락 속에서 본 연구는 문화 텍스트가 다종 가족의 서사와 ‘가족하기(doing family)’를 어떻게 재현하며, 인간과 비인간의 관계를 통해 새로운 삶의 모델을 수용하고 생산하는지 분석했다. <나의 어린고양이와 늙은개>는 한국 동물툰의 초기 대표작으로, 반려인과 반려동물의 동거를 다각도로 포착하며 인간-비인간 관계의 복잡성을 드러낸 텍스트다. 이 웹툰은 다종 가족의 실천이 경계를 초월하는 동시에, 차이와 불통의 한계를 안고 있음을 보여주었다. 이러한 텍스트의 분석을 통해, 본 연구는 ‘반려동물 천만시대’에 상상되는 새로운 인간-동물 관계의 다면적 양상을 재구성하고자 했다. 연구는 세 가지 목표를 중심으로 이루어졌다. 첫째, 다종 가족의 문화적 내러티브를 분석하여 인간과 동물이 일상에서 상호작용하며 형성하는 새로운 가족 관계를 조명했다. 둘째, 다종 가족이 제시하는 ‘좋은 삶’을 복합적으로 비평하며, 생태적 친밀성과 돌봄의 가능성 이면에 존재하는 종차별적 권력관계를 탐구했다. 셋째, 동물 내러티브가 이러한 종차별성에 대해 어떤 입장을 취하며, 인간 중심주의를 넘어서는 삶의 가능성을 어떻게 모색하는지 살펴보았다.

영문 초록

This study aims to critically explore contemporary multi-species families and the aspects of the ‘good life’ associated with them, focusing on the webtoon My Young Cat and Old Dog. South Korea has entered an era of ‘10 million companion animals’, with approximately 29.7% of all households currently living with the animals. Within this context, this study analyzes how cultural texts represent the narratives of multi-species families and the practice of ‘doing family’, as well as how they accommodate and produce new models of life through human-nonhuman relationships. My Young Cat and Old Dog, an early representative work of Korean animal-themed comics, captures the cohabitation of pet owners and their companion animals from multiple perspectives, revealing the complexity of human-nonhuman relationships. This webtoon demonstrates that the practice of multi-species families transcends boundaries while simultaneously bearing the limits of difference and miscommunication. Through the analysis of this text, the study seeks to reconstruct the multifaceted aspects of the new human-animal relationships imagined in the ‘10 million companion animal era.’ The research was conducted with three main objectives. First, it analyzed the cultural narratives of multi-species families, shedding light on the new familial relationships formed through daily interactions between humans and animals. Second, it critically examined the ‘good life’ proposed by multi-species families, exploring the species-based power dynamics that exist behind the possibilities of ecological intimacy and care. Third, it investigated the stance that animal narratives take toward such speciesism and how they explore possibilities for a life beyond anthropocentrism.
