‘환경위기’ 문학은 무엇을 할 것인가 - 1990년대 생태비평의 성격과 특질에 대하여

국문 초록

주지하다시피 1990년대로 접어들면서부터 일상은 물론이고 문학계에서도 환경문제를 둘러싼 관심이 높아졌던바, 창작 쪽과 비평 쪽 모두에서 관련 성과들이 활발하게 발표되었다. 이 글은 그 가운데서도 비평 쪽에 초점을 맞추고서 그 총체적인 상이 어떠했는지를 살펴보고자 했다. 관련 언설 전반을 두루 섭렵하되 쟁점화를 위해 ① 왜 문학이 환경문제를 다루어야 하는가, ② 환경문제를 다루는 문학의 적절한 명칭 및 분류는 무엇인가, ③ 대안으로서의 동양 사상은 얼마나 설득력이 있는가 등 세 개의 항목으로 나누어 다가가는 방식을 취했다. ①에 대해서는 여러 언설을 보아도 고민한 흔적이 많이 찾아지지 않았다. 아무래도 당연하다고 생각했기에 구태여 밝힐 필요가 없다고 생각했던 탓이다. 다만 그런 중에서도 문학이 지니는 일반적인 성질에 기대어 이유를 제시한 경우를 두 가지 정도 찾을 수 있었다. 하나는 문학의 본질에 기대하는 관점을 따른 것이고 다른 하나는 문학의 가치 및 효용에 기대는 관점을 따른 것이다. ②에 대해서는 논자마다의 기준이 세워져 있었다. 명칭을 둘러싸고서는 각자가 수긍할 만한 이유와 함께 ‘문학’에 ‘녹색’, ‘환경’, 생태’, ‘생명’ 등을 붙이는 양상을 보여주었다. 다만 명칭을 정할 때의 정밀함에 비겨 실제 작품을 어떻게 분류했느냐를 살펴보면 여러모로 아쉬움이 남는다. 작품이 어떠한 양상을 내보이느냐에 기초하여 구획해 놓은 정도로 머무르는 인상을 주기 때문이다. ③에 대해서는 전반적으로 비슷한 논조가 펼쳐졌다. 현재의 환경문제는 주체와 객체를 철저히 구분하는 서구식 근대적 사고로 인해 발생한 것이니만큼 주체와 객체 간 합일을 지향하는 동양 사상을 통해 근본적인 대안을 모색해 나갈 수 있다는 주장으로 요약, 정리가 가능하다. 하지만 여러 대목에서 역사성을 소거한 채 추상적 맥락으로 동양 사상을 이상화했다고 비판받을 소지가 있다. 근래에 들어 문학과 환경문제를 결부 짓는 견해가 다시금 활발히 제기되고 있다. 온고지신이든 반면교사이든 1990년대의 앞선 사례들을 참고한다면 더욱 생산적인 방향으로 나아가는 데에 도움받을 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

As is well known, since the 1990s, interest in environmental issues has increased not only in everyday life but also in the literary circles, leading to active discussions and publications in both creative writing and literary criticism. This paper focuses on the latter, aiming to examine the overall landscape of environmental discourse in literary criticism. While broadly reviewing related discussions, the study organizes its approach into three key issues: ① Why should literature address environmental issues? ② What are the appropriate terms and classifications for literature dealing with environmental issues? ③ Is the Eastern perspective a persuasive alternative? Regarding ①, there is little evidence of deep contemplation in existing literary criticism. This is likely because the necessity of literature addressing environmental issues was taken for granted. However, two notable perspectives can be identified: one based on the intrinsic nature of literature and the other on its value and utility. For ②, different critics have proposed their own standards. In naming this literary field, various terms such as “green”, “environmental”, “ecological”, and “life” have been attached to “literature,” each with a reasonable justification. However, while there was careful consideration in naming, the classification of actual literary works often appears lacking, generally remaining at a broad categorization based on surface-level characteristics. As for ③, a common argument prevails: since modern environmental problems stem from Western rationalism, which strictly separates subject and object, a fundamental alternative can be found in Eastern thought, which seeks unity between the two. However, this perspective risks idealizing the East in an abstract manner, neglecting historical complexities. Recently, efforts to link literature with environmental issues have regained momentum. Whether by learning from past achievements or drawing lessons from past mistakes, referring to 1990s literary criticism can help guide this field in a more productive direction.
