국문 초록

이 논문은 <더 페이버릿 : 여왕의 여자>를 통해 요르고스 란티모스 작품의 핵심은권력의 긴장과 균열이고, 이 순간 발생하는 낯선 상황이 특유의 ‘기이함’으로 드러나는 순간이라는 관점으로 작품을 살펴보았다. 연구에서는 그의 영화 특유의 ‘기이함’에대해 살펴보고 제임스 C. 스콧의 ‘은닉대본(hidden transcript)’과 ‘공개대본(public transcript)’의 개념을 통해 은닉대본이 지배층과 피지배층에 모두 존재하고 있고, 각자 가면을 쓴 채 사회적 지위에 강요된 공개대본으로서의 역할을 연기한다는 사실을논의하였다. 스콧이 이야기한 은닉대본과 공개대본 사이에 있는 정치적 완충지대가파열하는 순간이 가장 폭발적인 순간이라는 점에서 영화에서 완충지대의 파열 순간권력의 역전이 발생하고, 여기에서 란티모스의 영화의 ‘기이함’이 비롯된다고 보며 작품의 서사와 장면 연출을 살펴보았다. 영화는 애비게일의 시선을 통해 관객이 함께 지배계층의 은닉대본을 발견하는 형식으로 구성되어 있다. 피지배계층인 애비게일은 지배계층의 은닉대본을 목격할 수없다. 하지만 앤과 사라의 관계를 엿보며 지배계층의 두꺼운 가면이 벗겨진 순간을목격하고 애비게일은 공개대본을 연기하며 신분 상승의 욕망을 이루기 위해 위험한선택을 한다. 앤과 사라로 대변되는 지배계층에도 은닉대본이 존재한다. 지배계급은 자신들이사회적으로 보여야 할 공개대본을 연기하고 본심을 은닉한다. 여기서 은닉대본과 공개대본 간의 정치적 완충지에서 균열이 일어나고 강력한 폭발이 발생한다. 영화는 은닉대본의 시각화를 광각렌즈를 통해 구현한다. 광각렌즈의 속성으로 인해 왜곡된 상을 통해 가면 뒤의 인간적인 내면을 짐작할 수 있게 한다.

영문 초록

This article examines from the perspective that the core of Yorgos Lanthimos’ work is the tension and rift of power, and that the unfamiliar situation that occurs at this moment is revealed as a unique ‘Weirdness’. In the study, we looked at Mark Fisher’s theory about the unique ‘Weirdness’ of his films. Through James C. Scott’s concepts of ‘hidden transcript’ and ‘public transcript’, the study discussed the fact that hidden scripts exist in both the ruling and ruled classes, and that each of them plays the role of a public script imposed on their social status while wearing a mask. The moment when the political buffer between the hidden and public transcripts that Scott talks about bursts is the most explosive. In this regard, the reversal of power occurs at the moment of the rupture of the buffer zone in the film, and this is where the ‘Weirdness’ of Lanthimos’ film comes from, and examined the narrative and scene direction of the work. The film is structured in such a way that through Abigail’s eyes, the audience discovers the hidden script of the ruling class together. As a ruling class, Abigail cannot witness the hidden script of the ruling class. However, when she gets a glimpse into Anne and Sarah’s relationship and witnesses the moment when the thick mask of the ruling class is lifted, Abigail makes a risky choice in the act of being released and in the desire to rise in status. There is also a hidden script in the ruling class. The ruling class plays the role they are supposed to play in society and conceals their true intentions. Here, a crack occurs in the political buffer between the hidden and open scripts, and a powerful explosion occurs. In the film, the visualization of the hidden script is realized through a wide-angle lens. Due to the nature of the wide-angle lens, it is possible to guess the human interior behind the mask through the distorted image.
