국문 초록

본 논문은 헨리 제임스의 1878년 발표작 『데이지 밀러』에서 등장인물들의 내면의식을 분석하여, 이들이 공적 공간과 사적 공간의 경계를 허물고 새로운 공간을 창출하는 과정을 고찰하고자 한다. 이러한 논의를 통해 제임스의 작품이 지닌 사회적·문화적 의미를 더 풍부하게 고찰할 수 있다. 작가의 “경험을 통해 환원된 국제주의 의식”을 복원하고 재인식하는 데 필요한 새로운 관점을 제기하고자 한다. 더불어 공간과 등장인물의 상관관계를 분석하고, 주인공 데이지를 관찰하는 윈터본의 그의 내적 및 외적 경험을 통해 제시되는 국제적 갈등 양상을 바탕으로 ‘유럽 속 미국’에 대한 새로운 해석의 가능성을 제시하고자 한다. 이는 작품에 관한 다양한 가능성과 새로운 해석으로 다른 문화를 포괄적으로 이해할 수 있는 해석의 지점들을 양산해 줄 것이다.

영문 초록

Daisy Miller, written by Henry James, presents the international theme by showing the cultural conflicts between Europe and America. The aim of this paper is to analyze the change of Winterbourne's inner consciousness caused in the correlation between some spaces and the characters that affects him to change his attitude towards the world around himself and his acquaintances. The aspects of Winterbourne's inner conflicts are analyzed according to his observing Daisy. Their consciousness and identities will be totally considered through understanding their point of views to each other. In addition, by analyzing the relationship between public and private space and characters, and based on the aspects of international conflict presented in Winterbourne’s internal and external experiences observing the main character Daisy, we will attempt to establish a new interpretation of “America in Europe.” This will produce a variety of interpretation points that can comprehensively understand other cultures through various possibilities and new interpretations of the work.
