국문 초록

바퀴는 인류 문명에서 가장 중요한 발명 중 하나로, 이동 수단의 발전과 물류 효율성 향상에 중요한 역할을 담당해 왔다. 그러나 근대 이후 자동차의 등장으로 수레의 활용이 급격히 감소했고, 오늘날은 명맥이 거의 끊겼다. 이러한 상황 변화 속에서 전통 수레의 기원과 발전 과정을 고찰하고, 구조적·기능적 특성을 분석했다. 목공과 야장(冶匠) 기술이 혼합된 전통 수레 제작술의 보존을 목표로, 문헌 조사, 현장 조사, 기술 분석을 통해 전승 현황을 체계적으로 파악하고, 계승의 필요성을 고찰했다. 특히, 금속과 목재의 정밀한 결합으로 이루어지는 수레 제작 공정에서, 철물이 중요한 역할을 하는 바퀴에 연구를 집중했다. 그 결과, 철물이 수레 전체의 내구성과 안정성을 강화하는 핵심 요소임을 파악했으며, 야장 기술을 능숙하게 수행하기 위해서는 오랜 수련을 통한 기술력의 습득이 반드시 필요함을 확인했다. 전통 수레 제작술은 단순한 운송 도구 제작을 넘어 역사적·기술적·문화적 가치를 지닌 중요한 고유 유산이다. 따라서 계승과 보존이 필수적이며, 무형유산으로 보호할 가치가 있음을 강조함으로써 전통 기술의 지속적인 전승에 기여하고자 한다.

영문 초록

The wheel represents one of the most pivotal inventions in human civilization, having played a foundational role in the evolution of transportation and the enhancement of logistical efficiency. However, with the advent of automobiles in the modern era, the use of traditional carts has sharply declined, rendering their legacy nearly obsolete in contemporary society. In response to these shifts, this study investigates the origins and developmental trajectory of traditional carts and provides a comprehensive analysis of their structural and functional attributes. To preserve traditional cart‑making techniques—which integrate woodworking and blacksmithing craftsmanship—this research conducted a systematic examination of the current state of transmission through an interdisciplinary methodology involving literature review, fieldwork, and technical analysis. The study also addresses the necessity of sustaining and perpetuating these traditional skills. Particular emphasis was placed on the wheel, where metal components are crucial to achieving the precise integration of metal and wood in the cart‑making process. Findings reveal that metal significantly enhances the cart’s durability and structural stability. Moreover, the study confirms that mastering blacksmithing requires prolonged training and highly specialized technical competencies. Accordingly, traditional cart‑making is not merely the fabrication of a utilitarian transport device but constitutes a distinctive form of heritage imbued with historical, technological, and cultural significance. By emphasizing its value as intangible cultural heritage, this study aims to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing transmission of traditional craftsmanship.
