국문 초록

예이츠의 초기시는 아일랜드가 영국의 식민지를 겪던 시기에 발표된 것으로, 암울한 국민들의 마음속에 고상하고 영웅적인 기상을 심어준 것으로 높이 평가된다. 이러한 찬사는 예이츠가 신화, 아일랜드의 전설, 자연에 근거한 다양한 메타포를 사용하는 데 탁월한 역량을 발휘했기 때문인 것으로 사료된다. 이 논문의 목적은 예이츠가 초기시에서 어떠한 메타포를 사용했으며, 그것들은 예이츠 자신의 연애 경험뿐만 아니라 아일랜드의 사회적, 문화적, 정치적 상황과 어떠한 연관을 맺고, 어떤 함축적이고 내재적인 의미를 전달하는 지를 고찰하는 것이다. 이 논문에서 직유와 상징을 메타포와 같은 비유적 표현의 한 유형으로 간주하고 메타포로 통일하여 부르고 논문의 서두에 그 이유를 밝힌다.

영문 초록

Yeats’s poetry has remained in people’s memory for a long time due to his endeavor to impose noble and heroic spirit on the people’s minds in the dark period of his country under British colonial rule. To achieve this goal, Yeats employs various metaphorical expressions. The primary goal of this paper is to examine what metaphorical expressions are used in Yeats’s early poetry and what messages they deliver. To provide the rationale for the selection of the term ‘metaphor’ instead of ‘similes’ or ‘symbols,’ I elaborate on the differences and similarities in the terms.
