위기상황에서 초과영업이익에 대한 여유 운영자원의 역할: ESG의 조절 효과를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 2020년 초 WHO에서 팬데믹으로 선언한 COVID-19 상황을 기반으로, 기업의 운영 여유 자원과 ESG(Environment, Social, and Governance) 경영, 그리고 기업의 초과영업이익 간의 관계를 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 현대 경영환경을 둘러싼 불확실성이 점차 증대됨에 따라 자원 관리와 투자 역량의 중요성이 부각되고 있으나, 위기상황에서 어떤 전략적 선택이 나은 성과를 야기하는지에 대한 실증 연구는 부족한 실정이다. 기존의 문헌들은 자원의 수준을 낮게 유지하면서 효율적으로 관리하는 전략을 강조하였으나, 본 연구에서는 COVID-19라는 특수한 위기상황에서는 오히려 운영 자원의 잉여분이 불확실성을 완화시킬 수 있기에 기업의 초과영업이익에 긍정의 역할을 할 수 있음을 가설로 제시하였다. 또한, 위기상황에서 ESG 경영은 기업에게 부담이 될 수 있다는 관점에서 ESG 지표 달성을 위한 투자가 오히려 여유 자원의 긍정적인 영향력을 감소시키는 요인이 될 수 있음을 확인하고자 하였다. 회귀분석 결과, 기업의 초과영업이익에 대한 여유 자원의 양의 영향력이 있음을 알 수 있었고, ESG 성과 지표가 낮은 기업 군에서 여유 운영 자원의 양의 영향력이 유지됨을 알 수 있었다. 이는 위기상황에서 ESG 성과 지표 달성을 위한 과도한 자원 통제 및 관리가 오히려 기업 성과에 부정적 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 시사한다. 결과적으로, COVID-19와 같은 위기상황에서는 기업이 재고 및 설비에 대한 자원을 유연하게 관리하고, 형식적인 ESG 지표 관리를 위한 투자가 아닌 실질적 관리역량을 강화하는 것이 중요함을 본 연구의 결과를 통해 제안할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explore the relationship between a company's operating slack resources, ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) management, and its abnormal operating performance based on the COVID-19 pandemic. As uncertainty surrounding the business environment increases, the importance of resource management and investment capability has become more prominent. Existing literature emphasizes strategies for maintaining low resource levels while managing them efficiently. In contrast, this study hypothesizes that, in the crisis context of COVID-19, an excess of operating resources may help alleviate uncertainty and positively influence a company's abnormal operating performance. Furthermore, from the perspective that ESG management may pose a burden on companies during crises, this study tries to examine whether investments in achieving ESG performance metrics might actually diminish the positive effect of slack resources. The results of the regression analysis show that the amount of slack resources has a significant impact on firms’ abnormal operating performance, and it was observed that slack resources continue to exert a positive influence in firms showing low ESG performance. This suggests that excessive resource control and management aimed at achieving ESG performance metrics in times of crisis can negatively affect firm performance. Ultimately, his study suggests that in crisis situations like COVID-19, the management of slack resources is favorable for abnormal operating performance and that it is more important to have operational flexibility than to invest in excessive ESG management systems.
