『아미타경』의 교육학적 해설 : 사바세계에서의 교육과 극락세계에서의 교육

국문 초록

『아미타경』은 대승경전 가운데 하나로서 산스크리트어 원본과 한어(漢語), 티베트어 등 다수의 번역본 텍스트가 남아 있다. 『아미타경』과 정토사상은 특히 한국을 비롯한 동아시아 각국에서 불교사적으로 높은 위상을 차지해 왔고, 동아시아의 수많은 사람들의 생각과 행동, 그리고 마음의 형성에 큰 영향을 끼쳐왔다. 이 논문은 『아미타경』을 교육학의 시각에서 해설한 것이다. 연구자가 『아미타경』을 교육학의 연구 대상으로 삼은 까닭은 두 가지다. 하나는 ‘메신저’인 붓다의 특별함 때문이다. 대부분의 경전이 그러하듯이, 『아미타경』 역시 교육자 붓다의 강의록 형식으로 편집되어 있다. 교육자로서의 붓다의 태도와 열정, 사랑, 그리고 교육적 전략 등이 텍스트에 잘 나타나 있고, 교육학 연구자들은 이 점에 주목해야만 한다. 교육학자로서 연구자가 『아미타경』을 주목하는 또 하나의 이유는 이 텍스트가 담고 있는 ‘메시지’의 특별함 때문이다. 교사로서 붓다가 제자에게 전하고자 하는 메시지는 사바세계에서의 교육과 극락세계에서의 교육으로 구분해서 논의할 수 있다. 사바세계에서의 교육은 강의에 참석한 사바세계의 청중에게 극락세계와 아미타불에 대하여 설명하고, 그들의 삶의 방향이 사바세계에서 극락세계로 전환하도록 촉구하는 것이 주 내용이다. 극락세계에서의 교육에서는 극락세계가 성불(成佛)을 목적으로 만들어진 학교이며, 극락세계의 교육환경과 교육방법도 성불에 최적화되어 있음을 알려주고 있다. 이 논문에서는 『아미타경』의 교육학적 시사점과 아울러 불교의 교육고전으로서의 의미가 있음을 지적하고 있다.

영문 초록

The 『Shorter Sukhāvatī-vyūha』is one of the Mahayana Sutras, and several translated texts from Sanskrit, Korean, and Tibetan remain. The 『Shorter Sukhāvatī-vyūha』 and Pure Land Buddhism have held a high status in Buddhist history, especially in East Asian countries, including Korea. In addition, powerful Buddhist sects have been established in China and Japan based on this scripture. This scripture greatly influenced the thoughts, actions, and formation of the minds of countless people in East Asia. This paper explains the 『Shorter Sukhāvatī-vyūha』 from the perspective of pedagogy. There are two reasons why I made the 『Shorter Sukhāvatī-vyūha』 the subject of pedagogical research. The first is because of the speciality of the Buddha, the 'messenger'. As with most scriptures, the 『Shorter Sukhāvatī-vyūha』 is also edited in the form of a lecture book by the Buddha. The Buddha's attitudes, passion, love, and educational strategies as an educator are well illustrated in the text, and should be noted by pedagogical researchers. The second reason why I, a pedagogical researcher, pay attention to the 『Shorter Sukhāvatī-vyūha』 is because of the special nature of the 'message' contained in this text. The message that the Buddha wanted to convey to his disciples is divided into education in the land of the Buddha (this world) and education in the land of Amitabha (land of Sukhāvatī). Buddha explained the world of paradise and the Amitabha Buddha to the people living in a world full of pain and urged them to change the direction of their lives from the Sabah world to the world of paradise. Education in the land of Amitabha is equipped with the best conditions and circumstances for achieving enlightenment, free from the difficult situations and conditions of a suffering world. Education in the land of Amitabha suggested the goal of the Buddha School, a magnificent educational environment, and the easiest educational method. The 『Shorter Sukhāvatī-vyūha』 has a meaning as an educational classic of Buddhism comparable to Plato's 『Politeia』.
