제임스 게일(James Scarth Gale)의 장르별 한문 고전 번역원리 一考察: The Korea Magazine을 중심으로

국문 초록

이 글은 영문 잡지 The Korea Magazine 소재 제임스 게일(James Scarth Gale)의 한문 고전 英譯 작품의 번역 양상을 분석함으로써 그의 장르에 따른 번역 원리의 一端을 고찰한 것이다. 게일의 번역 텍스트에 관한 분석은 꾸준히 수행되고 있다. 특히 그가 작성했던 ‘번역의 원칙’에 드러나는 도착어 중심의 번역관을 기반으로 그의 번역 텍스트에 관한 평가와 비평이 전개된 바 있다. 그러나 이 원칙은 성경 번역과 긴밀한 관계를 맺고 있어 재고의 여지가 있다. 이에 이 글은 게일이 왕성하게 번역 활동을 했던 시기에 출간된 The Korea Magazine을 대상 자료로 삼아 그의 번역 원리를 산문과 운문으로 구분하여 재검토하였다. 그 개략은 다음과 같다. 게일은 산문 및 운문 텍스트를 번역할 때 1차적으로 직역주의 원칙을 고수하였다. 인명 및 지명과 같은 고유명사를 음역하는 한편 원천 텍스트의 일부를 종종 의도적으로 생략하였다. 운문 텍스트의 경우, 원천 텍스트와 전혀 다른 방식으로 행을 설정하거나 일부 구절을 생략하여 번역하기도 하였다. 이처럼 게일은 직역주의 번역관을 견지하는 한편 원천 텍스트의 일부를 변형시켰다. 기존 논의에서는 이러한 텍스트 변형의 동인을 그의 목표수신독자 중심의 번역관으로 귀결시켰다. 그러나 이 글에서 주장하는 바는 다음과 같다. 게일이 원천 텍스트를 변형시켰던 까닭은 양 문화권 독자 간의 지식적, 문화적 간극을 좁히고, 또 운문 텍스트의 경우 영어권 독자들에게 영시로 수용되게 하려는 의도에서 비롯된 것이 아니다. 오히려 출발어 중심의 번역관을 고수하면서도 원천 텍스트의 사상과 관념을 요약적으로 전달하고자 했던 그의 번역관, 그리고 원천 텍스트의 형식적 등가까지도 구현하고자 했던 그의 번역 원리가 산문 및 운문 텍스트의 변형을 초래한 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper explores the characteristics of James Scarth Gale's translations of Literary Sinitic texts into English in The Korea Magazine, aiming to delineate his translational principles across different literary genres. Continuous scholarly examination has been devoted to Gale's translation endeavors. Such analyses have particularly focused on the 'Principles of Translation' outlined by Gale himself, highlighting his inclination towards a target language-centric approach in translation. However, these principles predominantly pertain to Biblical translations rather than the literary works Gale translated into English. In light of this, this paper revisits Gale's translation principles, categorizing them into prose and poetry, with a particular emphasis on The Korea Magazine, a publication that coincided with Gale's most active period of translation. The summary proceeds as follows: Gale applies the principle of transliteration in his translations of both prose and poetry texts. He renders proper nouns, including personal and place names, using Korean pronunciation, often while strategically omitting segments of the source text. In his poetry translations, Gale sets lines in a completely different manner from the source text, either by altering the arrangement of lines or by excluding certain verses entirely. Such practices underscore Gale's commitment to literal translation, coupled with deliberate modifications to the source text. However, this paper argues that Gale's alterations of the source text are not primarily motivated by an intent to bridge the cultural gap between readers from different cultures, nor were they aimed at rendering poetry texts in a form more palatable to Anglophone readers as English poetry. Instead, it was his translation perspective, which aims to succinctly convey the ideas and concepts of the source text while adhering to a source-language-centric approach, and his principle of achieving formal equivalence of the source text, that lead to the modifications in both prose and poetry translations.
