국문 초록

『서유기』는 유교, 불교, 도교적 요소가 잘 드러나고 있는데, 이 삼교는 서로 회통하고 있다. 첫째, 유교적 요소로서 ‘충’은 신하가 임금에게 충성해야 사회질서가 혼란을 겪지 않고 올바르게 유지된다는 것을 말하고, ‘효’는 자녀가 부모님을 봉양하고, 존중하는 것은 지극히 마땅한 일이며 이는 곧 하늘과 땅이 정한 도리에 해당한다. 둘째, 불교적 요소로서 ‘윤회’는 과거에 행하였던 업이 원인이 되어 현재까지 미치는 결과로서 선한 일을 행하면 선한 결과를, 악한 일을 행하면 악한 결과를 맞이하게 되는데 이는 곧 ‘인과응보’를 말한다. 이러한 인과응보를 짓는 주체는 다름 아닌 인간의 마음이다. 따라서 이 마음이 선업을 짓기도 하고 악업을 짓기도 하는 것이다. 셋째, 도교에서는 수행자들이 궁극적으로 도달해야 하는 목표가 ‘신선’이 되는 것인데, 신선이 궁극적으로 지향하는 바는 ‘불로장생’하는 일이다. 『서유기』는 각자 다른 생각을 가진 이들이 서로 화합하고, 일치하며, 상생할 수 있는 길을 제시하고 있다.

영문 초록

Journey to the West exhibits elements of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, which harmoniously intersect. Firstly, the Confucian element of ‘loyalty’(忠) asserts that a subject's loyalty to their ruler ensures that societal order is maintained correctly without experiencing chaos. ‘Filial piety’(孝) emphasizes that it is fundamentally proper for children to support and respect their parents, as this is aligned with the natural order established by Heaven and Earth. Secondly, the Buddhist element of ‘reincarnation’(輪迴) denotes that the actions performed in the past serve as causes that influence present outcomes. Performing good deeds results in positive outcomes, whereas committing bad deeds leads to negative consequences, illustrating the principle of ‘karmic retribution’(因果應報). The agent responsible for creating this karma is none other than the human mind. Thus, it is this mind that generates both virtuous and unvirtuous actions.Thirdly, in Taoism, the ultimate goal for practitioners is to become an ‘shenxian’(神仙), and the ultimate aim of these immortals is to achieve ‘eternal life’(不老長生). Journey to the West proposes a path where individuals with different beliefs can harmonize, unify, and coexist, demonstrating the potential for mutual flourishing.
