『논어』 및 그 해석사는 정합성을 갖는가?

국문 초록

『논어』에는 공자 한 사람의 언행으로 보기에는 앞뒤가 맞지 않는 듯한 내용이 함께 실려 있다. 管仲에 대한 공자의 평도 그런 부정합의 사례로 거론되곤 한다. 「팔일」 22에서는 관중을 폄하하는 듯한 반면 「헌문」 10·17·18에서는 각각의 이유를 들어 그를 칭송하면서 仁을 언급하기까지 했기 때문이다. 이 글은 관중에 대한 공자의 상반된 듯한 평이 과연 정합성을 갖는지, 또한 『논어』 해석사에서 가장 영향력이 큰 『논어집주』는 이를 어떻게 독해하는지 등을 살펴보는 데 주안점을 두었다. 주자의 定論에 영향을 준 程頤의 관중 관련 발언은 물론 『논어정의』·『논어혹문』·『주자어류』·『회암선생주문공문집』의 관중 관련 내용을 통틀어 『논어집주』 주석의 입론 과정을 추적했다. 이 과정에서 관중에게 내려진 공자의 상반된 평가를 정주학은 어떻게 정합적으로 이해하는지를 좀더 상세하게 살펴볼 수 있었다. 또한 공자의 관중 평을 정합적으로 이해하기 위한 정주학적 해석의 근거가 과연 타당한지도 재고하게 되었다. 이와 별도로 공자의 관중 평이 모순적이라는 오해를, 춘추 말이라는 시대 상황에 대한 공자 나름의 진단과 처방이라는 관점에서 그리고 『논어』 속에 있는 또 다른 발언들과의 유기적이고도 종합적인 독해를 통해 해명함으로써 그 정합성을 변호하고자 했다.

영문 초록

In the Analects, we can find passages where Confucius appears to be inconsistent; one of the representative examples is Confucius’ evaluation of Guanzhong. This paper examines whether Confucius’ seemingly conflicting evaluations can be understood consistently, and how the Lunyu jizhu 論語集註 (Collected Annotations of the Analects), the most influential text in understanding the Analects, interprets these clashing remarks. In this process, I discussed how neo-Confucian scholars interpret the opposing assessments of qixiao 器小 (being small-minded) and ruqiren 如其仁 (being humane) that Confucius had given to Guanzhong. I also examined whether the neo-Confucian scholars’ interpretations, which understand Confucius’ conflicting opinions consistently, are supported by sound reasoning or evidence. In addition, I defended the consistency of Confucius’ evaluation by arguing that the views suggesting Confucius’ remarks on Guanzhong is inconsistent misunderstand Confucius’ intention, not deeply considering Confucius’ own diagnosis and prescription of the situation in the late Spring and Autumn period. I also argued for the consistency of Confucius’ evaluation based on comprehensive and cross-checking readings of other remarks in the Analects.
