국문 초록

본 논문은 성악설에 보이는 악의 메커니즘을 밝힘으로써 악의 발생 구조와 해결 방법에 대해 규명하고 있다. 첫째, 인간의 본성은 고립된 주체의 본질이 아니라 외부세계의 타자와 끊임없이 상호작용할 수 있음 그 자체이다. 본성은 감각기관을 통해 외부대상을 感知하고 감정과 욕구를 일으킨다. 순자 철학에서 인간의 본성은 선천적인 도덕성이 아니라 외부대상과의 상호작용 그 자체이다. 둘째, 악은 욕구적 자아의 욕구 충족 과정에서 발생하는 타자에 대한 폭력이다. 본성은 외부대상과의 상호작용으로 욕구를 일으킨다. 욕구 충족 과정에서 욕구가 무한히 증폭됨으로써 자아는 욕구적 자아로 변하게 된다. 욕구적 자아는 한정된 재화를 쟁취하기 위해 타자에게 폭력을 행사한다. 셋째, 욕구적 자아는 타자의 시선에 의한 수치심으로 인해 자아와 욕구가 분리되고 善의 길로 나아가게 된다. 욕구와 분리된 자아는 수치심으로 발생한 자신의 이미지 훼손을 만회하기 위해 인위적인 배움의 길로 나아가게 된다. 자아가 禮를 통해 욕구를 실현할 때, 자아는 욕구와의 거리두기를 통해 타자와 함께 공존할 수 있게 된다.

영문 초록

This paper elucidates the cause of evil and its solutions by clarifying the mechanism of evil seen in Xunzi’s theory of xing e 性惡 (humanl nature is evil). Firstly, human nature is not the essence of an isolated subject, but rather the ability to ceaselessly interact with others in the external world. Human nature elicits emotions and desires by perceiving (gan 感) external objects through sensory organs and responding to them. In Xunzi’s philosophy, human nature is not innate morality, but the very interaction with external objects. Secondly, evil is the violence against others that occurs in the process of satisfying the desires of the desire-driven self. Human nature creates desires through its interaction with external objects and seeks to satisfy them. In the process of satisfying these desires, the desires infinitely amplify, transforming the self into a desire-driven self. The desire-driven self exerts violence against others to acquire limited goods. Thirdly, the desire-driven self separates itself from desires due to shame caused by the gaze of others and move towards the path of goodness. The self, separated from its desires, embarks on the path of artificial learning to redeem the damaged image of itself caused by shame. When the self realizes its desires through propriety (li 禮), the self can coexist with others by maintaining a distance from its desires.
