대중문화 속 낙태 재현에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 대중문화 속에서 낙태가 재현되는 방식과 양상을 한국의 드라마와영화 그리고 외국 영화들을 대상으로 심층 분석을 하고자 한다. 이를 위해 다음의 기준을 중심으로 텍스트를 살펴보았다. 첫째, 텍스트에서 다루어지는 낙태의비중, 둘째, 낙태를 결심한 여성 캐릭터에 관한 묘사의 특징, 셋째, 여성 주인공이낙태를 결심하게 되는 내면적 원인, 넷째, 낙태를 둘러싼 외재적 압력과 대인관계의 소통 양식, 다섯째, 낙태행위가 빚는 죄의식의 양상, 여섯째, 텍스트 안에서 낙태의 실행 유무, 일곱째, 낙태의 재현 양상 등이 그것이었다. 연구 결과 한국의 대중문화에서 소구되는 낙태는 주로 인물들 간의 심리적 갈등을 심화하여 스토리텔링을 흥미롭게 만들기 위한 소재로 사용됨을 알 수 있었다. 여자 주인공의 임신은 여성의 캐릭터를 불균질하게 만들거나 여성 캐릭터의심리적 갈등과 정체성의 혼란을 그리는데 사용되는 경향이 있었다. 또한 여성 본인보다 제3자가 낙태를 강요하는 상황이 등장하고, 이때 강요자는 대개 주변 여성으로 설정됨으로써 낙태는 ‘여자들 간의 문제’로 개인적인 사안으로 축소되는특징이 있었다. 또한 낙태는 임신한 여성에 대한 고려보다 태아에 대한 죄의식이더 강조되며, 마치 일상적인 일인 것처럼 언급되면서도 매체 안에서 낙태가 그대로 재현되는 일은 드문 모순점이 드러났다. 낙태문제가 일찍이 공론화 되었던 서구의 영화들의 경우 역시 낙태를 핵심 주제로 다루고 있는 영화들이 빈번히 등장하고 있다. 이중에서도 90년대 이후 새롭게 등장한 <더 월>, <베라 드레이크>, <4개월, 3주… 그리고 2일>, <24주> 같은 외국 영화들을 중심으로 낙태의 재현양상을 살펴보았다. 외국의 경우 낙태를 윤리와 합법성, 여성간의 연대, 불법 낙태 시술을 조장하는 사회 분위기, 낙태와 연관된 여성의 자기 결정권 등의 요인과 연관시켜 핵심주제로 다루는 경향이 있었다. 또한 낙태의 전 과정을 구체적으로 재현하여 낙태가 여성의 몸과 마음에 미치는 문제를 관객들에게 질문하고 사회적인 관점에서 고찰하려는 태도가 두드러졌다. 이러한 연구 결과를 통해, 한국의 드라마와 영화들이 낙태를 스토리텔링 전개나 캐릭터를 특성화하기 위한 부수적 도구로 다루는 반면, 90년대 이후 등장한외국 영화들은 낙태가 내재하고 있는 사회적 개인적 문제를 환기시키고 이를 공론화하려는 경향을 발견하게 되었다. 낙태를 스크린에서 직접적으로 재현하고 다루면서 낙태를 둘러싼 여성의 자기 결정권과 그에 따른 문제들을 적극적으로 고찰하는 경향은 한국에서 낙태를 다루는 방식과 근본적인 차이를 빚고 있는 것으로 드러났다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare the ways and patterns of abortion in popular culture in Korean Tv dramas and movies with foreign films. For this purpose, I looked at texts focusing on the following criteria: first, the proportion of abortions covered in the text; second, the characteristics of a female character who decided to abort; third, the internal cause of deciding abortion; fourth, external pressure and the communication style of interpersonal relationship about abortion, fifth, the aspect of guilty feeling caused by abortion, sixth, the execution of abortion in texts, and last, the representation pattern of abortion in text. As results, abortion represented in Korean popular culture was mainly used as a material to make storytelling interesting by deepening the psychological conflict among the characters. A woman’s pregnancy usually was used to set up the woman’s character or to create a sense of confusion of the psychological conflict of a female character. While a third party forced to abort is emerging, at this time abortion is a matter of ‘problem between women’ and just adds to personal problem. Abortion also emphasizes the guilty about the fetus more than the consideration of pregnant women, and abortion is rarely represented in media even though it is mentioned as routine work. In Western films, where abortion issue was discussed earlier, there are many movies that deal with abortion as a core theme. Among them, I looked at foreign movies such as , <4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days> <24 weeks>. In these movies, social atmosphere that promotes abortion procedures, and the right of women for self-determination related to abortion. In addition, representation of the entire process of abortion and asking the audience for rethinking about the problem of abortion on the body and mind of the women, are very prominent. And considering abortion from a social point of view is also main factor in films. Through these studies, it is concluded that Korean dramas and films deal with abortion as a side tool to characterize the storytelling development and characters, while foreign films are more likely to find a tendency to evoke the social and personal problems inherent in abortion and to publicize it. The tendency to actively review women’s self-determination and abortion issue, while directly representing and dealing with abortion on the screen, has been found to be fundamentally different from that in Korea.
