국문 초록

뷔를레스크(Burlesque)영화의 핵심은 ‘시각적 개그와 코믹한 제스처’인데, 개그와 제스처는 서사체계에 삽입된 신체의 움직임으로 곡예적이고 폭력적인 행동들로 구성된다. 개그는 서사체계의 합리적 논리를 벗어난 비합리적이고 이질적인 요소로서 서사체계를 단절시키는 역할을 하는 것으로 인식되었다. 그러나 뷔를레스크 영화에서 개그의 가치는 서사체계와 비합리적인 행위와의 단절효과에 국한되지 않는다. 개그는 수용자인 관객의 현실세계에서의 기다림과 예측할 수 없는전개사이에서 간극을 발생시키고, 간극이 심화될수록 선형적인 서사체계와 개그사이에 이질적인 ‘부조화’를 만들어낸다. 또한 개그는 질서와 무질서, 현실과 비현실의 경계를 넘나들면서 현실을 재규정, 재조직하는 ‘역동적 형식’이 된다. 개그는 신체의 비정상적인 행위로 이뤄진 상황극 이라기보다는 서사체계와 독립하여 서사체계를 전복시키는 형식이자, 사회적 관습과 통념에 저항하고 그 경계를넘어서려는 정신을 담은 구조화된 형식이다. 따라서 뷔를레스크 영화는 현실의사회적 모순과 부조리를 자각하고 저항하는 ‘전복적 가치’를 지향한다. 이 전복적가치는 프랑스의 뷔를레스크 문학 정신에 그 뿌리를 두고 있다. 이 논문은 뷔를레스크 문학의 정신이 1910-1920년대 할리우드 뷔를레스크 영화의 개그와 제스처에서 구현되는 과정을 분석한다. 또한 뷔를레스크 영화의 대표감독인 채플린과키튼이 개그와 제스처를 통해 부조화의 논리를 상이한 방식으로 형식화하고 전복적 가치를 구현하는 과정을 고찰한다. 이를 통해 뷔를레스크 영화의 개그와 제스처가 지향하는 가치는 타자에 대한 실존적 존재방식임을 밝힐 것이다.

영문 초록

Burlesque film is characterized by “visual gags and comic gestures.” Gags consiste of acrobatic, violent, and irrational gestures. Gag was recognized as an irrational and heterogeneous element beyond the rational logic of the narrative system and was recognized as a role of interruption in the narrative structure. However, the gags in the Burlesque film are not limited to the disconnection of narrative and abnormal gesture, but are perceived as a ‘dynamic structure’ that re-organizes and reorganizes reality by simultaneously generating order and disorder. Gags can be described as a form of subversion in the narrative structure. Gags create a gap between the audience’s expectation in the real world and unpredictable development, and as the gap deepens, a linear narrative system and heterogeneous ‘dissonance’ of gag occurs. Gag is not a situational play caused by abnormal gesture of the body, but a structured form that contains the spirit of resisting and crossing social boundaries and conventions. Burlesque Films aims at “subversive values” that recognize and resist social contradictions and absurdities of reality. This subversive value has its roots in the spirit of French’s Burlesque literature. This paper analyses how the spirit of Burlesque literature is embodied in the gags and gestures of Hollywood films in the 1910-1920s. It examines also how the subversive values is realized in the form of gags and gestures in the Chaplin’s film and Keston’s film. Through this, the gags and gestures of the Burlesque film will be revealed as an the existential way of being for others in reality.
