‘봉준호 장르’의 가능성

국문 초록

영화 <기생충>의 크로노토프 서사전략은 ‘봉준호 장르’라는 새로운 영화유형 탄생의 가능성을 보여준다. 감독은 영화 속 사건들을 오늘날 의미 있는 ‘역사적 사건’으로 재현함으로써 ‘과거의 현재’로부터 ‘새로운 현재’를 만들어 낸다. 이것은 봉준호 영화에서 자주 볼 수 있는 특징 중 하나이다. 그는 추상적이고 보편적 인 사회문제를 한국사회라는 구상적인 크로노토프로 구현함으로서 로컬리티 (locality)를 확보하고, 이를 통해 글로컬라이제이션(glocalization)을 시도한다. 이 때 발생하는 문화장벽은 봉준호 영화의 특기인 ‘장면의 부조화’, ‘한국적 이미지 와 상징물 활용’ 등의 오락적 요소들로 극복했다. 여기에 감독 특유의 연출력과 인물들의 개성이 더해지면서 영화는 경쟁력을 갖추게 됐다. 영화서사의 중심축을 이루는 장소는 크게 두 곳인데, 기택의 가족이 거주하는 반지하 집과, 동익이 사는 고급주택이다. 감독은 하나가 될 수 없는 두 세계를 연 결시켜 자본주의의 패착인 신계급주의 권력구도를 가시화 한다. 이 때 영화가 보 여준 계급구도는 자본의 소유정도로 구분되는 정형화 된 선과 악의 구도가 아니 다. 감독은 인물들이 서로 경쟁하는 모습을 통해서 세상에 절대 선과 악이 없으 며, 누구든지 악이 될 수 있다고 말한다. 여기서 봉준호 영화의 또 다른 특기인 ‘결론 뒤집기’, ‘시공간의 대조적 묘사’, ‘낯설지만 친숙한 장소 활용’이라는 서사 전략이 드러나고, 이를 통해 영화는 하나의 장르로 규정할 수 없는 새로운 ‘봉준 호 장르’가 된다. 본 연구는 영화 <기생충>의 크로노토프에 나타난 서사전략을 분석해서 그것 이 장르형성에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지를 살폈다. 영화를 이해하는 이데올로기이자 서사의 토대가 되는 크로노토프는 영화 속 사건이 진행되는 사회적 맥락과 진행 방식을 보여준다. 이때 사용된 서사방식은 기존 영화에서 볼 수 있었던 장르문법 이 아닌, 새롭게 창조 된 장르문법을 따랐으며, 이런 규칙은 한국문학과 영화에서 주로 다루는 중심 소재 및 주제와 결합해서 한국적 장르영화의 탄생을 가늠할 수 있게 한다.

영문 초록

The chronotopic narrative strategy of the film Parasite shows the possibility of the birth of called Bong Joon-ho genre. The director reinterprets ‘historical events’ through the film and presents the new meanings they have today. This is one of the features that is often found in Bong Joon-ho’s films. He attempts to achieve glocalization through constructing a representative chronotope which in this case is Korean society dealing with abstract and universal social problems. He overcomes the cultural barrier with entertaining elements such as ‘disharmony of the scenes’ and ‘utilization of Korean images and symbols’. In addition to this, the director’s ability and personality of the characters make the film competitive. There are mainly two places that form the central axis of the film narrative: Gitak’s cheap semi underground house and Dongik’s luxury house. The director connects the two worlds that cannot be united, and visualizes the new hierarchy of the capitalist society. It is not a simple structure like the rich are good and the rest are evil. He tries to illustrate that there is no absolute good or evil in the capitalist world. Anyone could become evil during the competition. The strategies often found in Bong Joon-ho’s films, ‘overturning conclusion’, ‘contrasting time and space’, and ‘using unfamiliar but familiar place’, reveal the new Bong Joon-ho genre that cannot be defined as a current film genre. This study analyses the narrative strategy of chronotope in Parasite, and how it influences the formation of the film’s genre. Chronotope, the ideology of understanding films and the basis of narrative, shows how the events in the film are processed in the social context. The narrative method used in this film is not a genre grammar which can be seen in existing films, but a newly created one. The combination of this method and the main subjects and themes of the Korean literature and film shows the possibility of a new Korean film genre.
