한국기업 해외자회사의 현지화 수준에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 29개국에 진출한 119개의 한국 다국적기업의 해외 자회사 413개를 대상으로 자회사의 현지화 수준에 영향을 미치는 요인들을 분석하고 있다. 1998년부터 2002년까지의 패널데이터를 바탕으로 실증분석을 수행한 결과 계열사에 대한 자회사의 내부거래 의존성이 높을수록, 자회사의 현지 경험이 많을수록, 현지국의 제도적 수준이 높을수록 자회사의 현지화 수준은 낮아진다는 증거가 발견되었다. 이러한 결과는 계열사에 대해 자회사가 높은 내부거래의존성을 보일 경우, 본사는 자회사의 경영진에 HCN을 활용하기 보다는 자회사에 대한 조정과 통제활동에 효과적인 PCN을 파견하려는 경향이 존재함을 시사한다. 또한, 현지국에서의 사업경험이 누적되어 현지국에 특화된 지식이 충분히 축적된 상황에서는 현지 지식과 문화에 익숙한 HCN이 갖는 전략적 이점이 상쇄되기 때문에, 조정과 통제를 용이하게 수행할 수 있는 PCN을 파견하려는 경향도 존재한다는 결과도 제시되었다. 마지막으로 제도적 수준이 높은 국가에서는 제도적 공백으로 인한 경영활동의 제약이 크지 않기 때문에 PCN을 활용하는데 큰 어려움이 존재하지 않으며, 이러한 경우에도 HCN을 활용하기 보다는 PCN을 파견하려는 경향이 존재하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과는 해외진출을 고려하고 있거나 이미 진출해 있는 국내기업들에게 해외 자회사 현지화 수준의 영향요인을 제시함으로써 실무적 시사점을 제시해 줄 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzes the determinants of the localization of 413 overseas subsidiaries of 119 Korean multinational corporations in 29 countries. According to empirical analysis, based on panel data from 1998 to 2002, evidently in respect to the more intra-firm trade dependency of subsidiary, the more experience of subsidiary in host country, and the higher the institutional level of the host country is, the overall level of the subsidiary`s localization decreases. Such results imply that parent companies, rather than dispatching host country nationals(HCNs), they prefer parent country nationals(PCNs). They are viewed to have more effective control and the ability to make modifications over foreign subsidiaries, under circumstances of subsidiaries being highly intra-firm trade dependency within the MNCs network with their affiliates. Additionally, the idea that experience and knowledge of local cultures provided from HCNs are considered less valuable compared to the enhanced control and modifications PCNs can bring, after accumulation of business experience within the host country, was also proposed. Lastly, in countries with high institutional levels, there are not many difficulties dispatching and utilizing PCNs, since the limitations of business activities due to the gap of institutional levels are minimal. In the latter case as well, tendency of preferring PCNs over HCNs was observed. This paper has academic and managerial implication that it explains the level of localization of Korean overseas subsidiaries and it is expected to suggest some practical guidelines to Korean firms.
