영문 초록

Comparing a film to a recognized masterpiece can be a way of film criticism. By closely examining the similarities and differences, the analogy can serve as a multi-channel path that allows us to see the film in a new perspective. This essay attempts to read and understand the modern Korean film Burning (Lee Chang-dong, 2018) by comparing it with the 1950s Hollywood film Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock, 1958). By setting up an analogy between the two films in various aspects such as character structure, narrative flow, themes, protagonist's desire, and the act of looking, it tries to show that Burning is a profound and complex text comparable to Vertigo.
