退溪哲學에서 平和精神의 含意와 志向

국문 초록

오늘날 우리는 물질적으로는 풍요로운 삶을 영위하면서도 오히려 정신적으로는 피폐해진 이른바 물질만능시대에 살고 있다. 이는 개인 마음속에 들어 있는 마음의 평화를 찾지 못한 데에 기인하는 것이고, 더 나아가서는 이를 사회와 국가에 원용하지 못했기 때문일 것이다. 진정한 의미의 평화는 인간 본위의 인간관에 정초하여 타인의 인격을 존중하며, 서로 대등한 신뢰관계가 구축될 때 비로소 정착된다고 하겠다. 본고에서는 퇴계철학의 평화 정신에 기반을 두고, 내적 수양을 통한 개인의 평화와 사회적 조화 및 인간과 자연의 평화 공존, 그리고 국가 간의 평화에 관한 주제 등을 중심내용으로 하여 다음과 같이 세 가지로 설명하였다. 첫째, 퇴계는 마음의 평정심을 유지하기 위한 노력을 통해서 인간 내면의 순수의식을 체험하고, 삶에 대한 도리를 올바르게 성찰하여 실천해나갈 때, 개인의 평화를 이루게 된다고 보았다. 둘째, 퇴계는 사회적 평화와 자연 공존 사상은 하늘로부터 받은 본성인 理, 즉 太極이 근본이 된다고 보았다. 하늘로부터 받은 本性을 유지하면 공동체의 행복과 건전한 사회관계망이 형성되게 되고, 하늘과 인간 사이가 서로 분리되는 것이 아니라 合一되게 된다. 여기서 天人이 合一된다는 것은 본성에 맞는 삶을 통해 자연과 함께 공존하는 삶이라고 퇴계는 보았다. 셋째, 퇴계는 국가 간에는 신의[信]보다 중한 것이 없다고 하였다. 信은 誠과 통하는 의미로 헛된 말을 하지 않는 것이다. 즉, 信이란, 말은 행동을 돌아보고 행동은 말을 돌아보아야 한다는 뜻으로 서로 간에 신의를 지킨다는 것을 의미한다. 본고는 퇴계의 평화 정신을 통하여, 오늘날 우리의 개인의 수양과 이웃들과의 신뢰성 구축의 중요성을 강조하고, 아울러 자연과의 공존에 중요한 시사점을 제시하고 있다. 그리고, 나아가 남북 관계뿐만 아니라 한반도를 둘러싼 열강들과의 관계적 해법까지도 찾을 수 있을 것이라고 본다.

영문 초록

Today we live in a so-called materialistic age, where we lead a life of material affluence but are mentally impoverished. Probably we failed to find the inner peace in an individual s mind. Furthermore, maybe we could not apply to societies and the states. It is said that real peace is settled only when the human nature of people is settled, respecting other people s character on the basis of human nature, and equal trust is established. This paper, based on the spirit of peace in the Toegye thoughts, suggests three main themes of individual peace and social harmony through internal discipline, peaceful coexistence between human and natural, and peace between nations as followings. First, Toegye said that through efforts to maintain inner serenity, one can reach individual peace when experiencing the purity of the heart and properly reviewing and practicing the principles of life. Second, Toegye thought the idea of social peace and natural coexistence is based on Principle(理) or the Great Extreme [太極 tàijí], the nature received from heaven. If the nature received from heaven keeps Goodness, the happiness of the community and sound social networks are formed, and the relationship between heaven and man is not separated from each other, but becomes one. The Toegye saw that being lived together with nature as a life suitable for human nature. Third, Toegye said that there is nothing more important between nations than Sincerity. Sincerity is the language of truth, in which words are not used in vain. In other words, Sincerity means that Words should look back on the action and the action should look back on the words, which means that they are faithful to each other. This paper suggests, through the spirit of peace in the Toegye, the importance of personal training and trust in our neighbors and also presents the coexistence of nature as important implications. Furthermore, we will be able to find not only inter-Korean relations but also ways to resolve relations with the powers surrounding the Korean Peninsula based on it.
