수포자의 수학 학습 포기 경험에 대한 교육과정 사회학적 해석

국문 초록

‘수포자’는 수학 학습 부진을 넘어 수학 학습을 거부하고 포기하는 학생들을 일컫는 말로 최근 나타난 신조어이다. 본 연구는 자신이 수포자라고 생각하는 학생들이 수학을 학습하면서 무엇을 경험하는지를 분석하고 이를 교육과정 사회학 관점에서 해석한 것이다. 이를 통해 연구자는 수포자의 수학 포기경험을 교육과정 사회학적인 해석을 통하여 우리 수학 교육이 가지고 있는 문제를 해결하기 위한 시사점을 제공하고자 하였다. 수포자들의 수학 포기 경험을 해석하면서 대체로 다음과 같은 사실을 알게 되었다. 누구나 원하는 사회적 지위와 재화를 얻기 위해 청소년 시기에 시험 병목을 통과해야 하는데 우리 사회는 대학 입시가 중요한 시험 병목이 된다. 수학은 대학 입시라는 시험 병목을 통과하는 학생들을 선별하는 중요한 분류 수단이다. 병목이 좁아지면 수학 성적을 통한 경쟁은 더 과열되고 자녀가 병목을 통과하도록 돕는 것이 부모의 역할이 되기 때문에 부모는 어렸을 때부터 사교육을 통해 자녀에게 수학 공부를 강요한다. 학생들 역시 타인보다 수학을 잘하기 위해 최선을 다하지만 교육 시스템이 누군가 선별되면 누군가는 배제되기 때문에 수학 성적을 통해 선별되는 소수를 제외하고는 다수는 배제를 경험한다.

영문 초록

Supoja is a new term that has recently emerged which refers to students who refuse to study math and give up, causing them to underachieve. This study was set out to analyze the experiences of these students who regarded themselves as Supojas and interpret their experiences from the perspective of sociology of curriculum. The investigator intended to interpret Supojas experiences of giving up math from the perspective of the Sociology of Curriculum and provide implications to solve problems in math education. After attempting to interpret the Supojas experiences of giving up math, the study found the following: all societies ask adolescents to pass a bottleneck test so that they can have access to social status and wealth. In South Korea, the college entrance exam is an important bottleneck test. Math is one of the critical means of classifying students. As the bottleneck grows narrower, the competition based on math grades becomes even fiercer. Since parents have a role in helping their children pass the bottleneck, they force their children to study math through private education at an early age. Students try their best to excel in math, but some are selected and others are excluded in the education system, which means that a majority of students experience alienation except for the few that are selected for their high math grades.
