국문 초록

이 논문에서는 로버트 오웬의 『도덕 신세계』에 나타난 교육사상을 유토피아 담론의 에서 검토한다. 최근 지역공동체운동이나 동조합운동이 활성화되면서 오웬에 한 심이 재으로 재조명되는 경향이 있지만, 그의 교육론은 잘 알려져 있지 않고, 재 시사과 의 도 제로 다루어지지 못하고 있다. 오웬의 『도덕 신세계(The book of the new moral world)』는 인생 반 이후인 1842-44 년에 쓰여진 것으로 다분히 이상 주장이 ‘체계으로’ 담겨져 있다. 이 논문에서는 유토피아 교육론의 특징이 강하게 드러난 작인 『도덕 신세계』를 심으로 하여, 오웬의 사상이 지닌 특징을 검토하고, 그 재 시사을 논의한다. 오웬의 논의는 작은 공동체들의 가치에 해 생각하게 해주며, 그것이 보다 확장된 인류사 회에 일종의 빛이 될 수도 있음을 시사한다. 한 그러한 거하고 근본 변화의 근간에 교 육이 있다는 그의 소신은 유토피아와 교육의 계에 해 생각하게 한다. 유토피아를 ‘공상’이 라고 폄하하기도 하지만, 공상은 건설 상상의 원천이 되기도 한다. 이상주의는 즉각 해법 을 찾는 데는 도움을 주지 못할 수 있지만 존재하지 않는 새로운 세계를 상상하게 하고 실 을 비틀고 복함으로써 안 가능성을 제기한다.

영문 초록

This article examines the utopian educational ideas presented in Robert Owen s The Book of the New Moral World written in 1842. Robert Owen, labeled by Marx and Engels as utopian socialist, together with Saint-Simon and Fourier, was also called by his followers, or the Owenites, as the Father of Cooperation. While his ideas and practices of a communitarian society had faded in the late nineteenth century, the influence of Owenism has continued into the successive centuries. The recent revival of the cooperative society movement and the local community education movement in Korea attracts` attention toward the visions and practices of the ninteenth-century utopian socialist, which is less known in the Korean academic context. This article looks at the utopian notions of the educational ideas expressed in The book of the New Moral World and discusses its theoretical and practical implications. Owen s utopian ideas, although he rejected such labels as visionary or utopian imposed upon him, had naive and unrealistic aspects in terms of the way he sought alternatives to the capitalist society, as criticized by the Marxists. Yet, the very utopian visions for a new society, based on perfect harmony between individuals, as fully developed rational beings, that enjoy happiness and equally share superior characters and functions in the political economy, based on sectarian communities of association and cooperation, continue to shed light on communitarian movements, with salutary visions to create universal or global citizenry, that aim to challenge, by wrenching or cracking, the gigantic system of exploitation and oppression.
