국문 초록

스마트폰이 등장하기 이전에 스마트폰의 기능을 갖춘 개인용 디지털 휴대기기인 PDA(Personal Digital Assistant)가 있었다. PDA는 2000년대 초반 IT산업의 주역으로 주목을 받았으나, 지속적인 기술 발전을 이루지 못하고 이제는 거의 사라지고 말았다. 한국 PDA산업 역시 약 10년간의 짧은 역사 속에서, 급속한 성장을 이루다가 빠르게 몰락하였다. 그러나 애플이 만든 1세대 PDA 제품 뉴튼(Newton)이 아이패드(ipad)로 발전하는 등, 기술변화 속도가 빠른 IT 산업의 실패한 역사를 산업사적으로 고찰하는 것은 큰 의미가 있다. 본 연구에서는 한국 PDA산업의 성장과 쇠퇴의 역사를 산업수명주기의 관점에서 도입기, 성장기, 성숙기, 쇠퇴기로 구분하여, 문헌연구와 관계자 인터뷰를 통해 정리하였다. 본 연구를 통해 기술적 환경 변화가 급격한 산업에서 기업의 대응 전략 및 산업 생태계 지원을 위한 정책적 시사점 등을 도출하였다.

영문 초록

Prior to the emergence of smart phone, there has been a personal digital mobile device, PDA(Personal Digital Assistant). PDAs have been paid attentions to the leading role of the IT industry in early 2000s, however, failed to achieve technical development and disappeared. Korean PDA industry has about 10 years of short industry history. During this short industry life cycle, this industry has shown very rapid growth and declination. It is meaningful to review a failure history in IT industry or high velocity industry despite its short history. For example, Newton, the first generation PDA made by Apple, has evolved to successful iPad products. The objective of this study is to research the history of PDA industry in Korea in view of industry life cycle and find implications for the future. The history of PDA industry can be divided in four phases; introduction, growth, maturity and decline phase, according to industry life cycle. Through the historic review of Korean PDA industry, this study derives several implications for managers and policy makers, such as environmental adaptation in high velocity industry, ecosystematic development, and consistent support/regulation policies.
