국문 초록

도예는 ‘용도’를 전제로 하는 공예의 한 분야에서 20세기 이후에는 현대미술의 한 장르로 자리매김하고 있다. 현대미술에서 사물은 인지적 상상력과 주관적 해석이 적용되어 본연의 기능, 의미,이데올로기로부터 해방되었다. 이러한 현대미술의 관점에서 도자기의 용도나 기능을 배제하고 특정 공간의 오브제로 재해석한 영국출신의 도예가이자 작가인 에드먼드 드 발(Edmund de Waal)의 작품은 주목받을 만하다. 대형설치작가로 알려진 드 발은 자기질 태토가 가지는 순백색의 특성과 물레성형이라는 전통적 제작 기법을 이용해 단순한 실린더 형태의 용기를 대량 제작한다. 그러나 용기는 용도를 전제로 만들어진 것이 아니라 유닛의 최소단위로 존재하게 되며 다양한 설치방법을 통해 공간을 구성하게 된다. 그가 제작한 단순한 형태와 소지의 흰색은 중세 해상실크로드의 주요 교역품 중 하나였던 ‘중국 도자기’와 바우하우스의 간결한 선을 모티브로 한 것인데, 이것은 동∙서양의 문화 교류를 작품을 통해 드러내려는 그의 의도가 담겨있다. 공간구성방법에도 그만의 특이한 점을 발견할 수 있다. 음악적 요소를 가미하기 위해 실린더 형태를 음표로 상정하여 공간을 구성하거나, 인식하지 못 하는 어두운 공간에 작품을 설치하여 날씨나 계절과의 연계성을 표현하는 등 관객과 소통 할 수있는 공간을 연출한다. 이러한 설치방법은 오브제와 건축공간의 교류의 가능성을 제시하는 한편 도자기가 주변 환경의 영향으로 인해 다양한 조형언어로 해석될 수 있다는 가능성도 제시하고 있다. 본 연구는 드 발의 작품에 나타나는 간결한 색과 형태 그리고 유닛 구성이라는 시각적 요소와 특정 공간에 설치하는 공간적 요소에 대해 살펴봄으로써 도자예술의 영역확장 및 동시대적 표현의 새로운 가능성을 제시하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Pottery is establishing itself as a genre of modern art since the 20th century from a field of crafts based on the premise of ‘usage.’ Objects in modern art became free from their original function, meaning, and ideology by application of cognitive imagination and subjective interpretation. From the perspective of modern art, works by Edmund de Waal, a potter and writer from England who excluded the usage and function of pottery and reinterpreted them into an objet of a specific space, are particularly noteworthy. De Waal, known as a large installation artist by using the characteristics of pure white in porcelain and wheel-thrown of traditional production techniques, is producing works that a large number of simple cylinder type containers. However, vessels are not made for the purpose of usage, but exist as the smallest substance of unit and comprises in the space by various installation methods. His simple form and white of vessels is produced with motifs that the simple line of Bauhaus and ‘Chinese porcelain’ which was the major trading good of medieval Maritime Silk Road. This is his intention to symbolize cultural exchange between East and West through his works. It is the special point of his works in the space composition method. He composes a space where interact with the spectators. For example, cylinder shape vessels assume the form of a note to add musical elements, or is installed in a dark space where is not recognized to express the connection with the weather and seasons. In the installation method, the function of exhibition space was assigned on space of building to suggest possibility of architectural exchange of a sculpture. In addition, ceramics are interpreted as a formative language of various meanings due to the influence of the surrounding environment. This study intends to expand area and to find a new possibility of contemporary expression as modern art by looking at visual elements of simple colors, shapes and unit construction and the spatial elements that are installed in a specific space.
