국문 초록

19세기 후반 미국에서 재료의 발전과 생산기술이 혁신적으로 향상되면서 유리가 일상생활과 밀접해질 수 있는 토대가 마련되었다. 이와 더불어 1960년대 초부터 시작된 스튜디오글라스운동(Studio Glass Movement)을 통해 유리가 공예가, 디자이너, 조각가들에게 예술표현의 한수단으로 여겨지게 되면서 더욱 친숙한 존재로 다가올 수 있었다. 이 운동을 성공적으로 이끈 중심에 데일 치훌리(Dale Chihuly)가 있다. 그는 우리에게 화려한 샹들리에와 거대한 규모의 유리 조형물을 옥외에 설치하는 유리조형작가로 더 잘 알려져 있다. 그러나 그는 스튜디오글라스 운동을 전 세계로 확산시키는데 큰 공헌을 한 교육자이자 현대유리를 탄생시킨 선구자이다. 본 연구에서는 그의 다양한 업적 중 소규모 유리공방체제, 교육기관 설립, 그리고 다양한 분야와의 융합과 교류를 통한 유리영역의 확립에 기여한 그의 활동을 중점적으로 조사하려고한다. 이 세 가지 요소가 현대유리 발전에 큰 기여를 했을 뿐 아니라 앞으로 한국유리의 활성화를 위해 중요한 지침서가 되기 때문이다.

영문 초록

The innovative improvements in materials and manufacturing technologies of the USA in the late 19th century led to a chance for us to more easily experience glass in daily life. Along with the change, since the early 1960’s when Studio Glass Movement was first introduced, the movement has been regarded as one of the ways of how glass artists, designers and other artists in different fields would present their art using glass, and that was what increased the popularity of the modern glass art even more. Dale Chihuly made a contribution to the success of the movement as a key participant of the event. To the general public, Dale Chihuly is more popular as a glass art designer who sets up glamorous chandeliers and huge glass artworks outside. However, he should be actually recognized as both an educator and a pioneer who devoted oneself to spreading Studio Glass Movement to the other parts of the world as well as who created the modern glass. Of various accomplishments that Dale Chihuly had made, this study aims to have an in-depth discussion on his careers and achievements particularly in relation to the small-scale glass handwork system, the establishment of educational institutes and the development of the field of glass through the combination of the field with other ones. The study decided to focus on such accomplishments because as far as the study understands, not only did those three factors make an impressive contribution to the growth of the modern glass but also they can be used as important guidelines to increase the popularity of glass in Korea.
