태극(太極)과 팔괘(八卦)문양을 활용한 우산디자인 연구

국문 초록

태극과 팔괘문양은 우리의 전통적인 문양 가운데서도 상징성이 가장 강한 것으로서 오늘날까지 우리생활 속에 그 의미만큼이나 강렬한 이미지로 존재하고 있는 이유는 그기에 우리민족의 근본사상과 문화적 정서가 담겨 있기 때문이다. 현대는 상품의 고부가가치 제고수단으로 국가의 고유문화를 담아낼 수 있는 디자인의 중요성이 강조되고 있고 이를 활용함에 있어서도 우리 고유의 전통문양은 매우 중요한 가치로 평가되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 무한경쟁의 세계시장에서 차별화된 우리 민족 고유의 정서와 사상이 담긴 태극과 팔괘문양의 역사적 배경과 의미에 대한 이론적 고찰을 바탕으로 이를 우산디자인을 위한 텍스타일디자인을 개발하고 시제품으로 제작해 봄으로써 전통문양의 현대적 디자인 활용 가능성을 모색해 본 것이다. 태극이 갖고 있는 대칭적 균형의 조형미와 사상적 원리, 빨강과 청색, 또는 노랑의 기본 색상은 다소 진부한 느낌으로 인식될 수 있지만, 이를 현대적인 디자인 트렌드로 순화시키는 디자인 시도이다. 또한 팔괘의 간결하고 절제된 선과 면은 태극과의 효과적인 조화, 또는 단독으로 적용하여 강렬한 이미지의 패턴으로 구사해 보고자 하였다. 이러한 태극과 팔괘의 조형 적인 요소를 활용한 텍스타일 디자인은 현대적 감각의 디자인으로 재해석하는 새로운 디자인 모티브로 한국을 상징하는 브랜드 이미지로 활용하는데 큰 의미를 둘 수 있다. 디자인 시제품 제작과정을 통해서는 소재, 패턴의 크기, 색상 조절 등 상품화 활용의 다양한 가능성을 확보할 수 있어, 태극과 팔괘문양의 상징적 의미와 더불어 가장 한국적인 디자인아이덴티티를 확립하는데 매우 유리한 소재라 할 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 향후 다변화되는 국제 경쟁력 속에서 더 많은 한국 전통적 이미지의 소재발굴과 한국문양의 현대적 응용을 모색하는 창의적인 디자인 연구개발로 국가 상징에 대한 새로운 이미지를 형성되어지길 바란다. 또한 이를 일상생활 속에서 다양한 방법으로 활용하여 국민들에게 보다 친근한 이미지를 구축하고 대한민국 브랜드 가치를 높인 디자인상품의 개발 연구가 지속적으로 발전되어지기를 기대해 본다.

영문 초록

The pattern of Taegeuk, known as the Great Ultimate, and that of Palgwae, known as the eight trigrams of divination, have been most tenacious among Korean traditional patterns, and they can have existed until this day as exquisite meaning and image in our lives since they bear fundamental ideas and culture of our people. As, modernly, the importance of the design which can embody the native culture of the nation is emphasized as the method giving high added value to the product, our own traditional pattern has more important value. In this study, we first contemplate academically historical backgrounds and meanings of Taegeuk and Palgwae patterns that contain native sentiment and spirit of our people which is differentiated in the world market of limitless competition. On the basis of this consideration, we seek an applicability of the traditional pattern for modern design by developing textile design for umbrella and producing prototype using the design. This is an attempt to apply Taegeuk to modern design by refining to the contemporary design trend, although an aesthetic value with symmetrical balance, an ideological principle, and primary colors-centric basic colors, red, blue, and yellow, which Taegeuk contains, can be recognized as a somewhat hackneyed sense. Also simple and understated lines and faces of Palgwae are employed as an intensive image pattern by reconciling them with Taegeuk neoterically or using independantly. I ascertained that these textile designs utilizing the formative constituents of Taegeuk and Palgwae are appropriate to use as the brand images symbolizing Korea as new design motives through reinterpreting from a modern viewpoint of design. And, through the making process of prototype, I found that the diverse possibilities of the utilization for commercialization including adjustment of materials, size of pattern and colors are secured, so these patterns can be very favorable material to establish the most ‘Korean’ identity of design with symbolical meaning of Taegeuk and Palgwae patterns. By this study, I wish the new image of nation’s symbol to be formed by excavating more motives of Korean traditional image and developing creative design for modern application of Korean pattern, in the diverse situations of international competitiveness. Also, I hope that research and development of design products which construct more intimate image to the public and enhance the value of Korean brand through utilizing this new image with various ways.
