영문 초록

This research aims to study the status of spoken Arabic education and awareness of learners in Korean universities. Generally, sociolinguistic situation of Arabic language is characterized by ‘diglossia’, it is co-existence of literary Arabic and spoken Arabic. So when teaching Arabic as a foreign language, issues to be considered primarily is how to teach a certain variant of Arabic - literary Arabic and spoken Arabic. Two kinds of variants are all important for a comprehensive language skills. According to the Arabic proficiency guidelines, Arabic learners with high levels of proficiency skills, should have the ability to communicate with a mix of two variants, with appropriate understanding depending on the discourse situation. Considering this importance, this paper will study the status of spoken Arabic education in Korean universities and awareness of learners through a survey of 70 students enrolled in the 3th and the 4th grade in department of Arabic language and department of Arabic interpretation & translation, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies which has the longest history of Arabic education in Korea. So we will analyze learners’ awareness and their demands of spoken Arabic education. Also we will seek to the direction of Arabic education based on results of the survey, while at the same time we will try to find a integrated teaching method of literary Arabic and spoken Arabic.
