국문 초록

Color scheme in films is an important factor in determining the delivery of the film’s overall message and its quality. In such expressions of color, color scheme has a very significant meaning. And in the establishment of color schemes, production designer plays a central role, one which is very important in raising the quality of the film. However, the reality in the Korean film industry is that, while it recognizes the importance of color scheme, the environment is not yet quite conducive for the production designers, who drive the color schemes, to properly play their role. In this connection, this study discusses the production designer's role in the establishment of color scheme in film production, and based on the interviews with art directors who play the role of production designers in film production, this study also proposes the issues and improvements to be made in production designer's implementation of their roles. In terms of issues in color scheme, this study sets forth (1) the lack of director's appreciation for color based on narrative composition; (2) issues in timing of staff formation and in system; and (3) lack of professional knowledge on the part of other departments in relation to color scheme giving rise to issues in communication efficacy. As a means of addressing these issues, this study proposes (1) recognizing the importance of the role of production designer and establishing mutually complementary relationship with the director; (2) recognizing the importance of color scheme to raise efficacy of communication with other departments, as well as the importance of enriching professional knowledge; and (3) procuring the budget and time necessary for color scheme in film production system.
