영어 원어민 활용 미국수어 접목 영어교육 프로그램에 참여한 청각장애학생의 영어 학습 경험

국문 초록

한국 청각장애학교 초등학교 과정 5, 6학년 4명을 대상으로 미국수어를 접목한 영어교육 프로그램을 진행한 후 학생의 영어 학습 경험을 분석하였다. 자료 수집을 위해 프로그램 중재 이전과 이후에 학생 대상 개별 면담을 하였고, 추가로 교사 관찰일지를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, ‘배우고 싶어진 미국수어와 영어’, ‘더 행복한 미국수어와 영어교육을 위하여’ 2개의 상위범주와 10개의 의미단위가 도출되었다. 미국수어를 활용한 다중양태 영어교육은 청각장애학생이 영어에 흥미를 가지고 자신감을 가지는 긍정적인 효과가 있었으며, 영어, 미국수어, 한국수어, 한국어로 연결하는 과정을 통해 다감각적인 이중언어 전략(translanguaging)을 활용하는 가능성을 관찰하였다. 그러나 미국수어, 한국수어, 한국어, 영어를 동시에 학습해야 하는 학습 상황은 학생의 인지적 부담을 가중할 수 있어, 청각장애학생에게 더 나은 영어교육을 제공하기 위해 청각장애학생의 언어적 특성을 반영한 맞춤형 교육과정과 지속 가능한 교육환경 지원이 필요함을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the English learning experiences of deaf students in the 5th and 6th grades at a deaf school in Korea after participating in an English education program integrating American Sign Language (ASL). For the study, four students-two 5th graders and two 6th graders-from a deaf school in the C city were selected to participate in the program. Prior to the ASL-integrated English education program, an assessment of the students' preparedness in both English and ASL was conducted to evaluate their learning levels. To collect data, individual interviews were conducted with the students both before and after the program intervention, and additional teacher observation logs were analyzed. The analysis revealed two main categories: ‘Desire to Learn More About ASL and English’ and ‘For a Happier ASL and English Education,’ with a total of ten sub-themes. The findings suggested that the multimodal English education using ASL had a positive effect, fostering students’ interest and confidence in learning English. Furthermore, the study observed the potential for employing a multisensory, translanguaging strategy, as students connected English, ASL, Korean Sign Language (KSL), and Korean in the learning process. However, the simultaneous learning of ASL, KSL, Korean, and English seemed to increase the cognitive load on the students. The study therefore recommends the development of customized curricula that reflect the linguistic characteristics of deaf students and the provision of sustainable educational environments to better support English education for deaf students.
