펫로스 증후군(Pet loss syndrome)을 경험한 성인의 적응 과정에 대한 현상학적 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 펫로스 증후군(Pet loss syndrome)을 경험한 성인의 심리적 어려움과 적응과정에 대한 본질과 의미를 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 반려동물을 상실해 본 경험이 있고, 상실 경험이 1년 이상 지났으며 상실에 대한 슬픔과 적응의 어려움을 보고하는 성인 7명을 대상으로 면접을 실시하였다. 수집된 자료는 Giorgi의 현상학적 연구방법을 토대로 분석을 실시하였으며, 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 45개의 의미단위를 20개의 하위범주로 구성하였고, 총 7개의 핵심구성요소가 나타났다. 총 7개의 핵심 구성요소로는 ‘상실한 반려동물의 존재 의미 재확인’, ‘상실과 애착을 공감 받을 수 없는 사회적 분위기’, ‘상실의 슬픔을 공감 받을 수 있는 지지체계 필요함’, ‘무엇으로도 해결되지 않는 죄책감’, ‘상실에 대한 외상 후유증으로 고통이 큼’, ‘시간이 흘러도 남아있는 상실의 아픔’, ‘상실 후 느껴지는 내면성장’이다. 이러한 결과는 펫로스 증후군으로 인한 심리적 어려움을 이해하고 이들의 심리적 구조를 이해하는데 도움이 되었다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 의의와 한계에 대해 논하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explore the essential structure and meaning of the psychological difficulties and adaptation process experienced by adults suffering from pet loss syndrome. To achieve this, in-depth interviews were conducted with seven adults who had lost a companion animal, with at least one year having passed since the loss and ongoing reports of grief and adjustment difficulties. The data were analyzed using Giorgi’s phenomenological research method. As a result, 45 meaning units were categorized into 20 subcategories, from which seven core themes emerged: (1) reaffirmation of the meaning of the lost companion animal, (2) lack of social empathy for loss and attachment, (3) need for a supportive system that validates grief, (4) persistent and unresolved guilt, (5) emotional suffering stemming from post-traumatic responses, (6) enduring pain of loss over time, and (7) inner growth following the loss. These findings provide insight into the psychological structure of pet loss syndrome and highlight the need for sensitive support strategies. The study concludes with a discussion of its implications and limitations.
