반려동물 상실을 경험한 반려인들의 박탈된 애도 경험에 관한 현상학적 접근

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 반려동물 상실을 경험한 반려인의 애도 경험을 탐색함으로써 반려동물을 상실한 반려인들의 인정받지 못하고 표현되지 못한 슬픔에 대해 심층적인 이해를 제공함에 있다. 이를 위해 전국에서 반려동물의 상실을 경험한 지 6개월 이내의 성인 반려인 10명을 대상으로 개별심층 면담을 실시하였다. 개별심층 면담은 1회, 60분~90분가량 진행되었고 그 내용은 Giorgi가 제안한 현상학적 연구방법을 사용하여 4단계로 분석되었다. 분석결과, 315개의 의미단위, 60개의 하위범주, 18개의 상위범주가 도출되었고 이들 개념을 모아 핵심내용을 구조화한 결과 ‘반려동물 상실의 생생한 비애’, ‘장례 예식으로 작별’, ‘표현하지 못하고 인정받지 못하는 슬픔’, ‘스스로 억누르는 상실의 슬픔’, ‘반려동물 상실에 따른 심리적 반응’, ‘반려동물 상실 후 나타나는 심리적 성장과 관계 재정립’, ‘애도를 위한 노력’의 7개의 주제가 나타났다. 본 연구를 통해 반려동물을 상실한 반려인들의 표현되지 못한 슬픔의 경험을 확인하고 반려동물을 상실한 반려인들의 애도를 돕기 위한 사회문화적 지지구축과 프로그램의 개발, 박탈된 애도의 전문적인 측정도구 개발의 기초자료를 제안한 것에 그 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the grieving experiences of pet owners who have lost their companion animals, and to provide an in-depth understanding of their unacknowledged and inexpressible sorrow. To this end, in-depth individual interviews were conducted with 10 adult participants from across the country who had experienced pet loss within the past six months. Each interview lasted between 60 and 90 minutes, and the collected data were analyzed in four stages using Giorgi’s phenomenological method. The analysis yielded 315 meaning units, 60 subcategories, and 18 categories, which were further synthesized into seven themes: ‘The vivid sorrow of pet loss’, ‘Farewell through funeral rituals’, ‘Grief that is unexpressed and unacknowledged’, ‘Self-suppressed sorrow of loss’, ‘Psychological responses to pet loss’, ‘Psychological growth and relationship redefinition after loss’, and ‘Efforts to grieve’. This study highlights the unspoken grief experienced by pet owners and underscores the importance of establishing sociocultural support systems, developing tailored mourning programs, and laying the groundwork for specialized tools to assess disenfranchised grief.
