아동 시지각 발달의 결정적 시기와 미술교육의 역할: 통합교과 ‘즐거운 생활’의 현황과 과제

국문 초록

본 연구는 아동 시지각 발달의 결정적 시기인 초등학교 저학년 시기에 미술교육의 역할을 탐구하고, 통합교과 '즐거운 생활'에서의 미술교육 현황을 분석하여 개선 방안을 제시하기 위해 수행되었다. 문헌 연구를 통해 아동의 시지각 발달과 결정적 시기에 관한 이론을 고찰하고, 현행 '즐거운 생활' 교과의 교육과정, 교과서, 지도서를 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 초등학교 저학년 시기(만 6-8세)는 시지각 발달의 결정적 시기로, 이 시기의 미술교육은 시각적 식별 능력, 시각-운동 협응, 공간 지각 능력, 시각적 기억력, 시각적 사고력 등의 발달에 중요한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 현행 '즐거운 생활' 교과에서의 미술교육은 주제 중심 통합으로 인해 미술교육의 내용 위계가 간과되고, 시지각 발달을 위한 체계적인 교육 내용이 부족하여 시지각 발달의 다양한 측면을 균형 있게 발달시키기 어렵다는 한계가 있다. 이에 시지각 발달의 결정적 시기를 고려한 교육과정 및 교과서 개발, 미술교육의 독자적 영역 강화와 통합적 접근의 균형 유지, 아동의 발달 단계를 고려한 다양한 미술 활동과 교수 방법 도입 등의 개선 방안을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 초등학교 저학년 시기의 미술교육이 아동의 시지각 발달을 효과적으로 도울 수 있는 방향성을 제시했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study was conducted to explore the role of art education during the lower elementary school years, a crucial period for children's visual perception development, and to analyze the current status of art education within the integrated curriculum ‘Pleasant Life’, while suggesting ways to improve it. Through a literature review, we examined theories on children's visual perception development and critical periods, and analyzed the current curriculum, textbooks, and instructional materials used in the ‘Pleasant Life’ curriculum. The results of the study indicated that the lower elementary school years(ages 6-8) are a critical period for visual perception development, and that art education during this period significantly influences the development of visual discrimination, visual-motor coordination, spatial perception, visual memory, and visual thinking. However, current art education within the 'Pleasant Life' curriculum faces limitations due to its thematic integration approach, which overlooks the hierarchical structure of art education content. Additionally, the lack of systematic instructional material for the development of visual perception hinders the balanced cultivation of its various aspects. Therefore, this study suggests improvement measures such as developing curricula and textbooks that account for the critical period of visual perception development, balancing the integrated approach with a stronger focus on independent areas of art education, and introducing diverse art activities and teaching methods suited to children's developmental stages.
