항아리의 상징에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 아주 오래전부터 우리가 익숙하게 사용하고 우리의 삶에 깊게 뿌리내리고 있는 항아리에 대해 알아보고 항아리의 상징성과 관련하여 항아리의 특징과 더불어 우리 민족의 정서와 일상생활에 깊게 연관된 옹기 항아리에 대해 깊이 고찰해 보고자 하였다. 항아리의 상징을 5가지 측면에서 확충하였는데 첫 번째 상징은 신성이다. 농경사회인 우리나라는 사람을 먹여 살리는 생명력의 상징인 곡식을 항아리에 담아 가신으로 정성껏 모시는 특징이 있었다. 두 번째 상징은 모성이다. 모성은 먹이고 보호하고 길러주는 힘을 가진 어머니의 모습으로 항아리는 모성성과 여성성을 의미한다. 세 번째 상징은 변환이다. 우리나라는 전통적으로 항아리에 김치나 장을 담아 보관하였는데 성경에서도 항아리는 물이 포도주로 변환되는 연금술적 비밀의 용기로 알려져 있다. 네 번째 상징은 담아두는 그릇으로 항아리에는 음식은 물론 배설물까지도 담겨졌는데 더욱이 옹기 항아리에는 한국인의 얼이 담겨 있다. 다섯 번째는 죽음과 재생이다. 항아리에 시신을 묻거나 화장한 후 유골을 담아 장례 용기로 사용하였는데 이는 고인의 마지막 안식처를 상징하는 집이자 죽은 자의 영생을 기원하는 의미가 있으며 죽음 이후의 삶에 대한 믿음을 나타낸다. 또한, 항아리가 모래놀이 상담 과정에서 어떻게 표현되고 변환되어 가는지 아동과 성인의 사례를 살펴봄으로써 항아리의 상징을 이해하는데 도움을 주고자 하였다. 본 연구는 우리 민족 정서에 흐르는 항아리의 다양한 상징적 의미에 대해 무속신앙, 신화, 민담, 종교, 문화, 민간전승 등을 통해 고찰하고 모래놀이 과정에서 항아리의 상징성이 어떻게 표현되는지 살펴보았다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾아볼 수 있겠다.

영문 초록

In this study, we tried to find out about the jars that we have been familiar with for a long time and are deeply rooted in our lives, and to examine the characteristics of the jars and the Onggi jars that are deeply related to the emotions and daily lives of our people. The symbol of the jar has been expanded in five aspects, and the first symbol is divinity. Korea, an agricultural society, was characterized by carefully serving grain, a symbol of vitality that feeds people, in a jar. The second symbol is motherhood. Motherhood is the appearance of a mother who has the power to feed, protect, and raise her, and the jar means motherhood and femininity. The third symbol is transformation. Korea has traditionally stored kimchi or sauce in jars, and jars are known in the Bible as an alchemy secret container in which water is converted into wine. The fourth symbol is a container for holding, and the jar contains food and even excrement, and the earthenware jar contains Korean ice. The fifth is death and regeneration. After burying or cremating the body in a jar, the remains were put in a funeral container, which symbolizes the last resting place of the deceased, is meant to pray for the eternal life of the dead, and represents faith in life after death. In addition, we tried to help understand the symbol of the jar by looking at the cases of children and adults about how the jar is expressed and transformed during the sand play counseling process. This study is significant in that it examines the various symbolic meanings of jars flowing through our national sentiment through shamanism, myths, folk tales, religion, culture, and folk transmission, and examines how the symbolism of the jars is expressed in the process of playing sand.
