울타리의 상징성 연구

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 울타리의 특성과 상징성을 탐색하여 확충하고, 그 상징성을 실제 모래놀이 치료 사례를 통해 확인하는 데 있다. 울타리는 일정한 공간을 막기 위해 풀이나 나무를 엮거나 돌 등으로 쌓아 경계를 지어 막은 것으로, 동서양을 불문하고 인류의 역사와 그 발전을 같이 해 온 요소이다. 울타리의 상징성은 크게 넷으로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 첫째, 울타리는 ‘경계’의 상징으로, 다양한 맥락에서 물리적, 심리적, 그리고 사회적 의미를 내포한다. 둘째, ‘방호와 안전’의 상징으로, 스스로 보호기능이 떨어져 위험을 막고 보호받고자 하는 불안한 심리를 반영한다. 셋째, ‘분리 또는 장벽․갇힘’에 대한 상징으로, 경계와 방호를 위해 세운 울타리로 인해 다른 세계로부터 분리되고, 스스로 배제당하는 장벽 속에 갇힐 수 있어 소통의 단절을 초래할 수 있다. 넷째, ‘성역’으로 내세에 들어가기 위해 울타리 앞에서 지니고 있던 속세의 것을 분리해 내고 새롭게 정화된 세상으로 들어가게 되는 것의 상징이다. 연구자가 모래놀이 치료를 진행한 사례들을 살펴보며 울타리를 많이 사용하는 내담 아동은, 다문화 또는 한부모 가정에서 가족의 경계가 명확하지 않고 혼미한 환경에서 본인을 스스로 지켜야 하는 경우가 많은 것을 알게 되었다. 이 연구에서 제시한 10세 남아의 사례는, 다문화 이혼 가정에서 모의 부재와 부정적인 모성, 부성 콤플렉스로 인해 공격성을 보이고 등교를 거부하는 상황에서, 모래놀이를 통해 영웅신화를 펼치며, 울타리를 놓아 경계, 방호와 안전, 분리와 장벽․갇힘, 성역의 상징성을 나타내는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 충동 조절이 안 되는 11세 남아의 사례는 다문화 이혼 가정의 아동으로, 부모가 이혼을 아동에게 숨기고 아동이 두 가정을 왔다 갔다 하며 생활하고 있었고, 부가 다른 여성을 엄마라고 부르라고 하는 상황에서, 경계를 세우고 자신을 지키고자 하는 방호의 상징으로 울타리가 자주 등장하는 것으로 해석 되었다. 또한 피해의식이 심하고 잘 우는 12세 남아의 사례는, 가정폭력이 심하고 가장의 책임감이 전혀 없는 부가 이혼하고 연락을 끊고 살고있고, 모가 다른 남자를 의존하며 함께 살고 있는 상황에서, 자신의 경계를 세우고자 방호와 안전에 대한 욕구의 상징으로 울타리를 놓고 있는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 다양한 측면에서 울타리의 상징성을 고찰하고, 실제 모래놀이 치료 사례에서 표현된 울타리의 상징적 의미를 탐색함으로써, 상징적 매개체로서의 울타리에 대한 이해와 통찰을 돕는 기초 연구라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore and expand the characteristics and symbolism of fences, and to confirm the symbolism through actual sand play treatment cases. A fence is an element that has been in common with the history of mankind, regardless of the East and the West, by weaving grass or trees or stacking stones to block a certain space. The symbolism of the fence can be broadly divided into four. First, the fence is a symbol of ‘boundary’, and it has physical, psychological, and social meanings in various contexts. Second, it is a symbol of ‘protection and safety’, reflecting the anxious psychology of preventing danger and being protected by its own protection function. Third, it is a symbol of ‘separation or barrier/trapping’, and it can be separated from the other world due to the fence built for boundary and protection, and can be trapped in a barrier that is excluded by itself, which can lead to a disconnection of communication. Fourth, it is a symbol of separating the secular things that were carried in front of the fence in order to enter the ‘sanctuary’ and entering a newly purified world. Looking at the cases in which the researcher performed sand play treatment, I learned that in multicultural or single-parent families, children who use a lot of fences often have to protect themselves because their family boundaries are not clear and are confused. The case of a 10-year-old boy presented in this study was a hero myth through sand play and a fence in a situation where he showed aggression due to the absence of conspiracy, negative motherhood, and paternal complexes in a multicultural divorce family and refused to go to school. An 11-year-old boy whose impulses cannot be controlled was a child from a multicultural divorce family, and it was interpreted that fences often appeared as a symbol of protection to set boundaries and protect himself in a situation where parents hid the divorce from children and children moved back and forth between two families. In addition, the case of a 12-year-old boy with a strong sense of victimization and crying well was confirmed to be trying to set his boundaries in a situation where he and his mother were living depending on another man after divorce, and expressing their desire for protection and safety as a fence symbol. This study can be said to be a basic study that helps understand and insights about fences as symbolic media by examining the symbolism of fences in various aspects and exploring the symbolic meaning of fences expressed in actual sand play treatment cases.
