고등연령 학교 밖 청소년의 삶의 경험에 대한 질적 사례연구 - 학교 밖으로 나오기 전과 후, 앞으로의 바람을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 고등 연령 학교 밖 청소년들의 삶과 그들이 직면하는 어려움을 탐색하고, 그들이 직면한 어려움을 해결할 방안을 제시하기 위해 질적 사례연구를 수행하였다. 사회의 일원으로 진출하는 고등 연령 학교 밖 청소년의 삶에 대해 초점을 맞추어 구체적으로 살펴보기 위해 16명의 고등 연령 학교 밖 청소년을 대상으로 심층 면접을 실시하여 자료를 수집하였으며, 이를 토대로 사례 내 및 사례 간 분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과, ‘부적응으로 인한 학교 중단과 선택’, ‘새로운 환경에 적응하기 위한 도전’, ‘한 단계 도약을 위한 고민, 욕구, 바람’의 3가지의 주요 범주와 9개의 하위범주, 35개의 의미있는 개념이 도출되었다. 이들은 학업 중단 이후 새로운 환경에 적응하는 과정에서 다양한 심리적·사회적 어려움을 경험하며, 자신의 미래를 고민하고 더 나은 삶을 모색하려는 욕구를 가지고 있었다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로, 고등 연령 학교 밖 청소년들이 안정적으로 사회적 역할을 수행할 수 있도록 개인적 성장 방안을 마련하고, 그들의 다양한 요구를 반영한 실천적·정책적 함의를 도출하였다.

영문 초록

This study entailed a qualitative case study aimed at exploring the life experiences of older out-of-school youth. The objectives were to understand the challenges they face and propose solutions. Sixteen older out-of-school youth were interviewed about their social transition experiences. The collected data were subjected to within- and cross-case analyses. The results provided an in-depth understanding of the expriences of older out-of-school adolescents. Specifically, three main categories were identified: school dropout and other life choices due to maladaptation; challenges adapting to a new environment; and concerns about and desires and aspirations for advancement. Nine subcategories and 35 concepts were also derived. In summary, the sampled youth experienced various psychological and social difficulties while adjusting to new environments after leaving school. Nevertheless, they showed a strong desire to contemplate their future and seek a better life. Based on these findings, this paper proposes personal growth strategies to help older out-of-school youth successfully fulfill their social roles. Practical and policy implications that reflect their diverse needs are also suggested.
