무불(巫佛)의 관계를 통해 본 함경도 무속신화 <셍굿> 연구

국문 초록

이 글은 <셍굿>에서 구연되는 여러 서인들에 대한 이야기를 총제적으로 이해하는데 목적이 있다. <셍굿>의 서두와 말미, 중앙에는 창세신화, 생산신 신화, 홍수신화로 알려진 <석가서인>, <천년 장재비>, <삼제석>이 구연된다. 이들은 불교의 포교를 위한 이야기이다. 혼란스러운 세상에 불법을 펴서 안정시킨 서인을 위해 불공을 드려야 하고, 이후 불교를 믿지 못하는 시절이 오면 세상에 홍수가 내려 새로운 세상이 펼쳐진다. 마지막으로 새로운 세상에서는 서인을 계승한 삼 제석이 등장하여 불교의 질서가 계속되고 있음을 표현한다. 즉, <석가서인>, <삼제석>에서 서인과 삼 제석의 좌정은 불교의 포교를, <천년 장재비>에서 장재비의 징치는 불교를 믿지 않으면 화를 입는다는 의미를 지닌다. 반면, <셍굿> 중앙에는 성주신화, 사찰기원설화, 인주신화로 알려진 <강박덱이>, <청애선비>, <원맥이>가 구연된다. 이들은 무속의 존재 이유를 표현하고 있다. 청애 선비 부부는 자식을 얻기 위해 황금산 절에 거듭 불공을 드리지만 결국 자식을 잃게 된다. 불교의 효험에 의문을 제기하는 내용을 담은 것이다. 아울러 강박덱이가 지은 옥황의 궁궐은 동티가 발생하고, 원맥이를 희생하여 만든 금상절의 종은 제대로 울리지 못한다. 이때 문제 상황은 불교가 아닌 무속의례인 안택굿과 손풀이를 통해 해결된다. 이렇게 보면 <셍굿>은 겉으로는 불교의 믿음을 주장하지만, 불교에는 한계가 있으며 그 한계를 무속이 해결한다는 의미를 담고 있다.

영문 초록

Understanding the stories of different Seo-in told in Senggut in its entirety is the aim of this article. The creation myth, the god of production myth, and the flood myth—the beginning, middle, and end of Senggut—are told in Seoka Seoin, Cheonyeon Jangjaebi, and Samjeseok. The purpose of these stories is to spread Buddhism, presenting that when you no longer believe in Buddhism, a new world will emerge as a result of global flooding, so you must pay Buddhist homage to Seoin who propagated and stabilized Buddhism in a confused world. It says that Samjeseok, Seo-in’s successor, finally appears in the new world and declares that the Buddhist system is still in place. Stated differently, Jangjaebi’s punishment indicate that failure awaits those who reject Buddhism. However, in the central part of Senggut, Gangbak Deck-i, Cheongae Seonbi, and Wonmaeki are narrated which are known as the seongju(house guardian) myth, the temple creation story, and the inju(sacrificing human during construction) myth. They articulate the rationale behind shamanism’s existence. Cheongae Seonbi couple eventually loses their children despite their constant sacrifices to the Hwangkeumsan temple. It includes information that calls into question the effectiveness of Buddhism. Furthermore, the bell of the Hwangkeumsan temple, constructed at Wonmaeki’s expense, is unable to ring correctly, and dongti takes place in the palace of the Jade Emperor, which Gangbak Deck-i constructed. Currently, shamanistic practices called Antaekgut and Sonpuli—rather than Buddhism—are used to resolve the issue. Therefore, Senggut asserts Buddhist beliefs on the surface, but it also implies that Buddhism has limitations overcome by shamanism.
