가면극 텍스트에 나타난 전통 지식의 수용과 구현 임석재본 <봉산탈춤>을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 본산대놀이 계통 가면극을 대표하는 황해도 지역의 <봉산탈춤>을 대상으로, 작품에 나타나는 전통 지식의 수용과 분포, 구현 양상과 그 의미를 종합적으로 고찰한 논의이다. 언어문화적 지식･문예전통적 지식･생활문화적 지식･자연환경적 지식･사회문화적 지식･종교신앙적 지식의 총 여섯 가지 전통 지식 유형 분류에 따라 임석재본 <봉산탈춤>을 분석한 결과, 문예전통적 지식이 가장 높은 비중을 차지하였으며, 이어 사회문화적 지식, 언어문화적 지식, 생활문화적 지식, 자연환경적 지식, 종교신앙적 지식 순으로 나타났다. 전체의 60%가량을 차지하는 ‘문예전통적 지식∙사회문화적 지식∙언어 문화적 지식’ 범주는 사회상의 반영과 그에 대한 비판이라는 <봉산탈춤>의 핵심 주제를 예술적으로 표현하고 효과적으로 전달하며, 30%가량을 차지하는 ‘생활문화적 지식∙자연환경적 지식’ 범주는 작품 안팎의 배경과 사건, 서사를 형성하는 데 일상적이고 친숙한 소재를 제공함으로써 그 주제를 구체적으로 구현하는 토대가 된다. 세 번째 범주의 종교신앙적 지식은 ‘성(聖)’의 영역에 속하여, <봉산탈춤>이라는 민중 기반의 가면극이 전통지식 차원에서도 ‘성’의 세계보다는 ‘속(俗)’의 세계에 관심을 두고, 이를 구현하는 데 많은 관심을 두었음을 보여준다. 한편, 유형별 전통 지식은 과장에 따라 특징적인 분포를 보이는데, 제2과장 팔먹중춤에서는 문예전통적 지식, 제4과장 노장춤에서는 언어문화적 지식, 제5과장 사자춤에서는 종교신앙적 지식이 부각되며, 제6과장 양반춤에서는 생활문화적 지식∙사회문화적 지식∙언어문화적 지식, 제7과장 영감∙할미춤에서는 사회문화적 지식∙생활문화적 지식∙자연환경적 지식이 대등하게 큰 비중을 차지한다. 특히 제2과장에 원용(原用)된 전고 중심의 문예전통적 지식은 19세기 문화사 속 방대한 지식 유통∙정리 현상과 관련되며, 제6과장과 제7과장에 구현된 사회문화적 지식, 생활문화적 지식 등은 <봉산탈춤>이 조선 후기 전통 지식 체계의 계층적∙젠더적 분화를 예리하게 포착하여 구현한 텍스트였음을 보여준다. 이상의 연구는 구비문학 텍스트를 단순한 문학 작품이 아닌, 전통 지식의 저장고이자 그 자체가 연행을 통해 또 하나의 전통 지식으로 기능하는 전승 매체로 바라보는 관점에서 출발했다는 점에서, 향후 다양한 구비문학 장르의 지식 체계를 고찰하는 확장적 논의를 위한 시론적 접근으로서 의의를 지닌다.

영문 초록

This study comprehensively examines the reception, distribution, implementation patterns, and significance of traditional knowledge in Bongsan Talchum, a representative mask dance drama from the Hwanghae region belonging to the Bonsandae Nori tradition. Analysis of Im Seok-jae’s version according to six types of traditional knowledge classifications showed that literary-traditional knowledge occupied the highest proportion, followed by socio-cultural, linguistic-cultural, life-cultural, natural-environmental and religious-ritual knowledge. The first three categories accounted for approximately 60% of the total, functioning to express and convey the core themes of Bongsan Talchum, reflecting and criticizing social conditions. The natural-environmental and life-cultural knowledge categories (approximately 30%) provided materials that form the foundation for implementing these themes by shaping the background, events, and narratives. Religious-ritual knowledge belongs to the realm of the “sacred(聖),” indicating that Bongsan Talchum, as a populist mask dance, focused more on the secular world than the sacred. Meanwhile, traditional knowledge by type shows characteristic distributions across scenes. Literary-traditional knowledge is prominent in scene 2 (Eight Buddhist Monks’ Dance), linguistic-cultural in scene 4 (Old Monk’s Dance), and religious-ritual in scene 5 (Lion Dance). In scene 6 (Yangban Dance), life-cultural, socio-cultural, and linguistic-cultural knowledge are equally prominent, while in scene 7 (Old Man and Old Woman Dance), socio-cultural, natural-environmental, and life-cultural knowledge occupy high proportions. In particular, the literary-traditional knowledge in Scene 2 is related to the extensive knowledge circulation phenomenon in 19th-century cultural history. The socio-cultural and life-cultural knowledge implemented through scenes 6 and 7 demonstrates that Bongsan Talchum sharply captured class and gender differentiation in late Joseon knowledge systems. This research is significant as a preliminary approach for examining knowledge systems across various genres of oral literature, highlighting the perspective of viewing oral literature texts not merely as literary works, but as repositories of traditional knowledge and transmission media that function as traditional knowledge themselves through performance.
