<춘향전> 재담사설 속 재담, 소화의 양상과 의의

국문 초록

이 글은 판소리 사설 중 재담사설들을 대상으로 그 속에 들어 있는 재담이나 소화들의 양상을 살펴 정리해 보고 그 의의도 알아보려 한 글이다. 그 분석 대상 텍스트는 <춘향가(전)>으로 한정하였다. 전승되는 판소리 작품 중 <춘향가(전)>에서 재담, 소화들이 가장 많이 발견되기 때문이다. 이들 이본을 대상으로 하여 살펴 본 결과는 이러하다. 판소리 사설 속에는 실컷 재미있는 재담을 늘어 놓고 ‘농담’이라느니 ‘망설’이라느니 할 때가 있는데, 이는 거꾸로 광대들이 이러한 류의 것들에 대한 그 나름대로의 변별적 인식을 지니고 있었음을 뜻한다. 이러한 재담, 소화들을 <춘향전> 텍스트로부터 추출해 내어 그 양상을 정리해 보았다. 먼저 지적할 점은 언어 유희(언어적 재미)가 재담사설 생성의 중요한 원리이자 핵심 기법이라는 점이었다. 이에 이어, 1) 욕망을 지니고 있어 그것이 약점이 되는 윗사람을, 아랫사람이 공격적이거나 상황 맥락과 어긋나는 말을 함으로써 결과적으로는 전락하게 하는 상하대화형, 2) 작중 인물이나 서술자가 서사의 틈을 파고 들어 엉뚱한 이야기를 들려 주거나 장면을 재미있게 구체화하는, 그 나름대로 웃음을 의도한 이야기라 할 수 있는 소화형 등의 양상을 드러내어 보았다. 판소리 역사상 점차 극적 음악성이 강화되어 가는 흐름과 더불어 재담사설은 약화되거나 사라져 갔다. 위 2)의 경우는 특히 더 그러했다. 하지만 여전히 판소리에 있어 재담은 중요한 위상을 지닌다고 보아야 한다. 향후 판소리의 미래와 관련하여 그 장르적 특성의 측면에서 재담에 대해 다시 주목해 볼 필요가 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This article examines and organizes the aspects of jaedam(witticism or joke) and sohwa(funny story) contained in pansori to uncover their significance. The text for the analysis was limited to Chunhyangga(Chunhyangjeon). Our findings are outlined as follows. Pansori narratives, there are sometimes considered akin to “jokes” or “lies” meaning that the clowns had their own distinctive perceptions of these jaedam. When searching for these jaedam and sohwa in the Chunhyangjeon text, the following two types were discovered: a conversation between two people in which the lower person uses language that can be seen as aggressive with an intention to bring down the higher person, and a type of sohwa in which a character or the narrator in the work exploits a gap in the narrative to tell a story that is different from the context of the work. These are sometimes embodied as the chang(singing), but are mostly realized through speech, with linguistic humor being an important principle and core technique in creating jaedam-saseol. In pansori’s history, a gradual weakening or disappearance of jaedam-saseol a has been witnessed along with the tendency to strengthen the chang(singing) side. In particular, the second type mentioned above has been decreased in this process. However, jaedam is still considered important in pansori, even though not as much as in the early days. Considering the future of pansori, it will be necessary to refocus on jaedam in terms of its genre characteristics.
