죽음의 물질성을 통해 본 죽음에 대한 인식체계 연구 <차사본풀이>를 대상으로

국문 초록

이 글에서는 한국 신화 <차사본풀이>에 등장하는 물질들이 인간과 연합하여 인간의 행위를 추동하고 죽음이라는 관념을 구성해나간다는 점을 밝히고자 하였다. 분석을 위해 브뤼노 라투르의 ANT이론을 빌려 신화를 구성하는 인간-물질 네트워크를 살펴보았다. 과양생이 각시와 강림은 삶에 대한 의지와 잘 살고 싶은 욕망을 가진 인물들이다. 과양생이 각시는 잘 살고 싶은 욕망 때문에 물질과의 연합을 통해 버물왕 아들들을 살해하고 그들의 재산을 갖지만 그 대가로 죽음이라는 벌을 받게 되고, 과양생이 각시의 문제를 해결하기 위해 차출된 강림은 저승에 가는 것이 두렵고 절망스러웠지만 물질과의 연합으로 두려움을 극복하고 죽음을 받아들인다. 인간-물질 네트워크를 통해 삶에 대한 인간의 강한 의지가 죽음에 더 가까이 다가가게 만드는 인간적 삶의 모순을 살펴보았다. 이 물질들에는 신화적 의미가 담겨 있다. 죽음 이후 생성된 꽃에서 구슬로 다시 뼈로 자신의 존재감을 나타내는 버물왕 아들들의 모습을 통해 죽음과 삶은 가까이 있으며 인간은 이러한 삶과 죽음의 순환 안에 존재하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 또한 떡, 강아지를 통해서도 인간, 신과 연합하는 물질들의 역할을 살펴보았다. 과양생이 일가족의 영원한 사라짐과 미물로의 변신은 결국 살아 있었다는 흔적만을 물질로 남긴 삶의 허망함을 보여주지만 동시에 강림의 저승차사로의 변신을 통해 인간 안에 깃든 신성을 확인할 수 있다. 요컨대 인간에게 있어서 죽음은 필연적이고도 불가역적인 사건이며 동시에 일상의 물질에 깃든 신성이 늘 인간의 곁에 남아 언젠가 이러한 자신의 운명을 받아들인 성숙한 인간 안에 신성이 깃들게 됨을 신화적 세계는 보여주고 있다.

영문 초록

This article aims to reveal that the substances appearing in the Korean myth of Chasabonpuri unite with humans to drive human behavior and form the concept of death. For the analysis, I borrowed Bruno Latour’s ANT theory to examine the network of human-material actors that constitute myth. Gangrim and Gwayangsaengi’s bride are characters with the will to live and the desire to live well. Through the human-material network, we examine the contradictions of human life that make the strong will to live bring us closer to death. These substances have mythological significance. Through the appearance of the sons of the King of Death, who manifest their existence from flowers to beads and then bones after death, we can see that death and life are entwined together and that humans exist within this cycle of life and death. The eternal destruction of the Gwayangsaeng family and their fall into inanimate objects ultimately show the futility of life, leaving behind only material traces, but at the same time, through Gangrim’s going into the afterlife as a messenger, we can confirm the divinity that resides within humanity. In short, the mythical world shows that death is an inevitable and irreversible event for humans, while at the same time, the sacredness contained in everyday materials always accompanies humans, and that sacredness ultimately resides in mature humans who accept their own fate.
