질적연구로의 질적 전환: 내러티브 정체성 연구를 사례로

국문 초록

본 연구는 심리학 분야에서 청소년을 중심으로 한 정체성의 개념과 연구 방법이 양적인 것으로부터 질적인 것으로 전환되어 가는 사례를 검토함으로써, 청소년 정체성 연구를 비롯하여 여타 분야의 질적연구가 적절히 이루어지기 위해서는 어떤 점들을 고려해야 하는지를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 에릭슨(Erickson, 1968)에 따르면 정체성은 심리사회적 현상으로서 고유성, 동일성, 지속성의 속성을 가진다. 심리학계에서는 그러한 정체성이 개인의 내면에 실체로서 존재하는 것이라고 간주하고, 그것을 과학적인 연구 방법에 의해서 법칙적으로 설명하고자 했다. 그러나 그것으로는 각 개인의 고유한 정체성을 파악할 수 없었다. 이런 이유에서 근래에 이르러서 일부 연구자들이 정체성을 내러티브로서 재정의하고, 내러티브 정체성 연구 방법으로 정체성을 연구하고자 시도하고 있다. 그것은 에릭슨이 제시한 심리사회적 현상으로서의 정체성을 연구하는 데 적절한 시도이다. 그러나 실제로는 내러티브로서의 정체성을 과학적인 논리를 기반으로 연구함으로써 각 개인의 정체성을 충실하게 밝혀내지 못하는 한계를 안고 있다. 내러티브 정체성 연구가 이러한 한계를 극복하고 내러티브로서의 정체성을 적절히 연구하려면 연구 방법이 연구 대상에 일관되어야 한다. 내러티브 정체성 탐구가 그 방법이 될 수 있다. 이러한 질적연구로의 전환은 언어로만 이루어지지 않는다. 질적연구는 글로 배우는 것이 아니라 몸으로 깨닫는 것이다. In this paper, I have attempted to review the development of youth identity studies from quantitative things to qualitative ones in the field of psychology and to determine what point should be considered in order to conduct qualitative researches properly, including youth identity studies. According to Erickson (1968), Identity is a psychological social phenomenon that has properties of uniqueness, sameness, and persistence. Most of psychologists regarded identity as a reality in the individual’s mind and tried to explain the rules of identity by scientific research method. But the method could not make them comprehend the unique identities of individuals. For this reason, some psychologists have recently been trying to redefine concept of identity as a narrative recently. And they are trying to research the identity by narrative research method. It is an appropriate attempt to study identity as a psychological social phenomenon presented by Erickson. But they do not draw an entire picture of participant's unique identity because of their scientific research approach. This means that still there have not yet been any established methods suitable for researching narrative identity. To adequately study the identity as narrative, research methods should be consistent with research subjects. Narrative identity inquiry can be an appropriate alternative. The transitional way to qualitative research is in field, not in book.
